Why not organize the news items into subfolders representing the month or week or some other information?

One main reason for me to ask the question is that this would be common problem for any site with a sizable amount of contents. I wanted to find out the "right" way to do it in MODx, or if there is already something built-in that I missed..

That’s really pretty easy in MODx if you have the coding skills. It’s just a matter of writing a plugin tied to a system event that fires when a document is about to be saved. The plugin would check the date and set the ’parent’ field of the document accordingly (creating the Folder if necessary).

That said, with that many documents, you should really be storing the data in a custom DB table as mentioned earlier. Using a separate document for each post carries a ton of overhead that you don’t really need or use. You might also check out the PubKitBlog add-on if you’re using Evolution.

Might I make a suggestion - you might want to take a look at jquery-based datatables.net for the container. Sorting and sifting through stories will be made easier for both the programmer and the user.
