As a growing digital marketing company, I'm beginning to question whether to continue with MODX. I started as just me and am now up to two full-time and two part-time employees. We are starting to compete with larger agencies that use other CMSs and e-commerce systems.

bigcommerce, wix, wordpress, shopify, 3dcart..... and others.

I have started to use simplecart by modemore and it seems very flexible but might prove to be less than adequate for larger product lines. 20,000+

I like MODX, my team likes it, I'm just feeling I'm missing something.

Could I get some feedback from the MODX community? Do you use MODx exclusively? What is your e-commerce solution?

I know very few that only stick to one tool and put all their eggs in one basket. However many agencies and designers puts MODX as their no. 1 favorite tool.

If you are on MODX Cloud, here are some good news: Flex Clouds https://modx.com/blog/2015/11/04/more-flexibility-for-your-projects-in-modx-cloud/

I always try to sell MODX but find most companies are fine with a static landing page.

On the topic of eCommerce have you checked out Foxycart and Bluecart?

      • As far as major web apps such as e-commerce and forums, it's hard to beat a dedicated project with any multipurpose tool like MODX.

Don't overlook MiniShop2 just because it's documented in Russian; Google Translate does a reasonable job of translating it all, and bezumkin is very helpful. The Russian community has quite an assortment of add-ons, many to use with MS2 or stand-alone.

They now have a complete e-commerce solution consisting of MODX + MiniShop2 + something like 11 other add-ons to provide a complete store interface.

ModMore is working on a new e-commerce project called "Commerce". This is a separate project from SimpleCart which ModMore took on after its developer Bert Oost was obliged to stop supporting it.

What do you feel you're missing?

What do you feel you're missing?

It's not anything specific I'm missing. It's more of a self-doubt. I chose to use modx years ago but as my company grows and I look at my competitors and friends in the industry and see what they use, and it makes me wonder. I've never been one to follow the masses but at times, you do need to step back.

E-commerce is a big concern as up until recently the options for modx have been hit or miss and support would just fall off for most plug-ins. As I stated, I started using simplecart. I purchased the unlimited monthly license to help support the effort. (Mark, I did send in the request to use commerce, is it production ready or still beta?)

So, it's not anything specific that I'm missing. I'm just questioning if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, where most the developers and designers are, at least in the US.

You can say I "grew up" in Modx. I'm a designer/self-taught (still learning) developer, and 99% of the sites we maintain are on modx. (We have one WordPress site, and I hate it!! ) I'm proud of what I've done. I've built some complex websites, at least for me, and I'm learning more all the time.

Does modx have any shining jewels? Large sites, companies or agencies that are built on Modx? Maybe I just need a different fence to look over.

@crecorn I kind of know what you mean. I love MODX but every now and then I feel the same way. I think it's because things are going relatively well with my business also. Projects keep coming in and I routinely turn to MODX. But every now and then I think "hmm, do I have blinders on? Am I just picking MODX because I feel comfortable with it?". So I'll do some reading up on other CMSs—look under the hood and all. But I still keep coming back to MODX. It promotes a nice separation of logic and display code. The "Creative Freedom" is a real thing for me. I also like that I can literally paste in my HTML/CSS, drop in some chunks and TVs, and have something clients can use relatively quickly. At the same time, if I wanted to develop a completely custom web application, the CMPs let me do that.

I say it's okay to have doubts every now and then. To look around at other CMSs and compare. I would be more concerned if I didn't do that and simply had blinders on. In the end, for me at least, I keep coming back to MODX.
