Dashboard - Widget to check for updates

Is there actually a widget for the Dashboard where I am informed that there is a new version of modx available like in wordpress?

It's called Updater.

FYI, I'm working on a new extra with a widget that checks for upgrades and installs the upgrade from within the Manager -- not quite as smoothly and silently as WordPress does it, but much easier than downloading and manually putting the files in place.

That sounds great Bob. Do you think it will be able to cope with slightly hardened installations where core has been moved and manager renamed?

Yes, definitely. I just used it to upgrade a site like that.

The beta version is on GitHub now, but unfortunately GitHub no longer lets you upload a transport.zip file for users to download.

You could try putting it all in assets/components/upgrademodx/ and running the built.transport.php file in the _build directory. If it works, it will put the transport file in core/packages and you can "Search Locally for Packages" in Package Manager. I'm not sure that will work.

If not, you'd have to download and install MyComponent and do this:

1. Put the files from GitHub in assets/mycomponents/upgrademodx/
   [li]Copy the upgrademodx.config.php file in the _build/config directory to the core/components/mycomponents/_build/config directory
2. Put 'upgrademodx' in the MyComponent _build/config/currentproject.php file (replacing example)
3. Launch MyComponent in MODX and run Bootstrap, ImportObjects, ExportObjects, and Build
4. Search locally for packages in Package Manager[

Or you can just wait for the release.

You can't commit the transport.zip file in your local repository as a new file, then push to your github repository?

Doh. I guess I could.

TBH, I don't want to get too many copies out there before it's been tested a little further on more platforms.

I've been meaning to put it through its paces, but I'm approaching deadline on a redesign project, and the client is starting to get nervous.

I went ahead and released it, so you can install it in Package Manager. Just keep in mind that it's a Beta version.
