    Hello.

I use Evo since long time. And I love it. I know that some prefer Evo than Revo. That's why I wonder why. Why use Evo instead of Revo? What is the differents between each one? I'm a french user and I want to know if Revo manage multi-languages in good conditions.

    Thanks a lot.

Most People, which prefer Evo, do so, because it is lighter and because they feel, its manager is faster.
Actually I'm working faster with Revo, but this depends on each ones workflow.

IMO, Revo has many advantages over Evo,
especially when you do lot of custom codings with custom-tables involved and you've learned, how to deal with xpdo-objects.

With Revo you have Lexicon-management on board out of the box.
You can store Lexicon-strings for each language, which you can fetch everywhere with special lexicon-tags,
depending of the current cultureKey - setting.

To manage multiple languages in Revo, there are several Extras out there.

I think, the most used is Babel.
With Babel, you have one context for each Language and you need to have duplicates of all Resources and TVs for each Language.

There is also Lingua and migxMultiLang, both translate resource-fields and TVs at the same page.
They do not use duplicate resources.
They just switch the cultureKey and some settings to get the translated values into the page.

Lingua does use the default resource-form-panel for each language.
With migxMultiLang you have a MIGX-grid with all languages and a configurable tabbed form in a modal-window to manage the translations.

Can I ask if someone have an another opinion (or the same)?
I read that Evo is faster than Revo. Is it true?

It is, but only slightly so. The limitations outweigh the manager speed in my opinion however. One can do do much more with Revolution. It isn't a question for most of today's sites. Cumbersome TVs and the inability to use modern plugins and snippets, all developed for Revolution kills the appeal of a slightly snappier manager.

Quite honestly, all the clicking and reloading of manager pages just to get to certain parts and adjust settings completely negates the wait time for a Revo manager page to load. Plus you're without the right click and quick edit options, drag and drop, etc. So much more pleasant in Revo. And none of the cool extras work. I like using extras that are actively developed. Got a problem with MaxiGallery... no one there. Got a problem with MoreGallery or pdoTools... get answered in in a normal time frame because the people actually still exist and care.

Have yet to find a client that truly needs Evolution, but that doesn't mean they aren't out there. Massive resource heavy sites might very well find Evo is the better option still.

              My two cents:

              Support:

              REVO: Great and Fast support

EVO: Surely the lack of support, in the last few years, is the biggest limitation for Evolution users, but for me I use it for 10 years, is not a problem. smiley

              Extras and System development:

REVO: Many extras available and a more info about the development roadmap

EVO: Another big problem is that most of recent and interesting extras for Evo, have not been discussed (sometimes published) on this forum, but there are many extras that compensate lacks between evolution and revolution.

You need to search them in github or in the Russian or Japanese community, same, if you want more infos about development.

              Manager:

I really love the latest Revo manager, but I believe that is more appreciated by us developers, but less by customers.

Revolution manager has dramatically improved in recent versions and some new features are really useful and make my job much more enjoyable, but many of my customers still prefer the simplicity, speed and the ability to customize the Evolution manager.

My clients, rarely have high-speed connections, but they always have a very little patience for "page loading" and even less ability to appreciate certain advanced features wink

              Features:

REVO: Revo it's a Modern and Powerful cms/cmf: you can manage multiple sites with a single CMS, keep safe the manager out of the public folder, custom codings with custom-tables, lexicon and more.

EVO: Although lacking of the most advanced Revo features, Evolution is still able to satisfy all the characteristics required for the development of a website, which is big, small, multilingual, ecommerce or other. Often with less server resources and more speed.

              Security:

REVO: Revolution is the most secure CMS that I know.

EVO: It is not as Revolution, there's no doubt, but the major security issue there were in the period of abandonment of its development. Currently there are no known issues

              My Conclusions:
Evo is still a great software, perhaps a little less powerful, but it has its advantages.

Thanks. A lot. And thanks Nicola for your detailed response.

To read you, you seem to use both. So, how can you choose?

Bonus question: Revo seem to work like Evo. In terms of use, what is the difference between Revo and Evo?

                  It depends on many things

in many cases, but not always:

Revo: For big projects with custom code, applications and community with a lot users.
Hosted on VPS or dedicated Servers
Revo has a lot of features like xPDO, Contexts and a good Users Managment (Evo does not have features like users custom fields or bulk actions)

Evo: For "company websites" (95% of my customers)
Hosted on Shared Hosting or small vps
Evo it's faster, ligher and allows me to customize the Manager to further simplify the daily work of the manager users (the customer) in no time (with Manager Manager and EvoDashboard)

but sometimes I do the opposite smiley

Two last questions. Important for me and I'll be greatful for your answers wink

If my client is afraid about the security and he's right because there is a high risk to be hacked, do I understand that Revo is the best choice?

I started using Revo and indeed the Manager is a little bit heavy to load. Question: The front-end is also affected?

Plus, I wonder if that many of you begins to move to Revo, is that true? [ed. note: neoziox last edited this post 11 years, 2 months ago.]
