Yep, this same bug will also kill a lot of more complex javascript applications like UFO.
The site I discovered this happening on is using XHTML strict...

Actually, I’ve experienced the bug when using the short closing tag with XHTML strict and transitional doctypes, i.e. <base href="..." />, and with several different javascripts, including UFO, SWFObject, Mootools, and several custom js files. And in these cases, it’s not just a rendering bug, IE6 reports an error via dialog that opening the web page has caused an error, and doesn’t even attempt to render a single part of the page.
Using the full closing tag with all doc types corrects the problem.
It is definitely an IE6 bug with any doctype, so you should always use the </base> closing tag.

What puzzles me is that this has been in templates for a long time now, and nobody else has noticed the problem?
I had this once or twice thinking that it was a design flaw with my website.

That and stuff like this
italics bug is enough to make one tear out one’s hair

At least with this one you can fix it easily, but one can never be sure where the client will decide to use italics.
I had the full base tags but
I still have this is big issue with Maxigallery on IE
I’m using
http://www.jeroenwijering.com/ mediaplayer to rotate swf banner (mixed swf, jpg or whatever) and the Maxigallery pages crash IE
Some clues are supposed to be found here
http://aralbalkan.com/912 or here
http://www.rednas.be/news/43/swfobject-internet-explorer-error-fix
I guess the swfobject coming with the mediaplayer script is not the original one...(?)
but I dont have the coding skill to deal whith it and really needa some hand.
Thank you
