Quip doesn't send notification mail

I just installed Quip, and since the doc for Quip.QuipReply doesn't make any mention of enabling mail (or requiring other packages), I was thinking that everything might just work out of the box. The test post appears in the comments on the page as it should, but no mail gets sent. My shared hosting uses Exim.

Should sending of email notifications by Quip have worked out of the box? How do I proceed? Thanks.

Do user create and password change emails get sent? That should tell you if modMail, the default sender is working.

A good start with many things that are a bit broken is to check in System settings to see if anything looks wrong or missing.

Navigate to System » System settings on the right of the manager ( manager/?a=64 )

and use the filter to show settings containing "email" or "quip" for instance.

This has turned into a nightmare of many hours, most or all of it centering on Articles. The history:
-being just experimenting with MODX, I originally installed into shared hosting at /public_html/modx
-I briefly tried out Articles
-I really liked MODX and so started developing an actual site
-I eventually moved [i.e., copied] all the MODX files to /public_html, and correctly edited the *several* config files. Everything seemed fine, until...
-using Quip as a standalone, I discover it won't send notification emails. I see that it *sometimes* wants to use the old installation
-I uninstall, remove, and reinstall all the extras several times, trying various things
-I discover yet even one more cached config file* (do they ever end?)

-now... when I click on almost any resource to edit it, I get only a completely blank screen (except for the one page using a static resource). However, the error log gets a new entry then: "[2013-10-27 15:10:39] (ERROR @ /connectors/resource/index.php) Could not load class: ArticlesContainer from mysql.articlescontainer." It's looking for Articles though Articles isn't called on any page anymore and in fact has been removed.

It seems that Articles has its tentacles into places that do not get removed when Articles is uninstalled and removed; and Articles gets registered somewhere and does not get that deleted.

So that's part of it, I'm posting this here so the next poor victim might get some insight.

I've also seen this: "Could not load class: quipNotifyComment from mysql.quipnotifycomment." I wondering if Articles and Quip share code.

If you look in your Elements Tree do you see an Articles plugin? If so is it still active? Did you re-run setup after moving your site up a directory?

1) I see no plugin for Articles under the plugin tree. But I do see CodeMirror and Tiny MCE there, though they both had been removed.
2) I did re-run setup today. Everything was reported as being okay, but right after that was when I started getting a black screen when trying to edit a resource.

I have since done a fresh install of MODX at a new domain. I uploaded my db to that. I most certainly did not install Articles there, but the site doesn't function and the error log says "[2013-10-27 16:47:27] (ERROR @ /connectors/resource/index.php) Could not load class: ArticlesContainer from mysql.articlescontainer." Articles has apparently infected the db.

I also ran today the test_setup.php at https://github.com/craftsmancoding/modx_utils and it reported that all was okay.

Hm, were the resources you are trying to edit originally Articles? You'd see a modArticle class_key definition for them in the site_content table. Setting those back to modResource *might* fix it although I'm still not sure where the reference to ArticlesContainer could be coming from. Is there a core/components/articles folder still laying around?

Thanks, you're on to something here, JP. I had made only 1, called '1st article', which I'm pretty sure I had deleted - then eventually had 'removed deleted resources'. So that '1st article' has not appeared in the tree since then.

BUT guess what? That '1st article' is in the modx_site_content table!

I also uploaded a db dump from 1 hour ago to a fresh domain. '1st article' is there is the fresh tree and also in modx_site_content. Very weird. It's class_key is ArticlesContainer, then the next row has an entry with class_key=article. The ArticlesContainer has parent=0, so it's not like it could have been hiding in a deep folder in the tree.

You're the author, right? Should I delete those 2 rows from the table?

As for core/components/articles: it's not in the 2nd (moved) install; but it is in today's fresh install. Delete that wherever I find it?

splittingred is the original author, and I've since done what I can to take over future development. If you want Articles completely gone, I'd delete or change the modArticle rows in the database, and also remove the core/components/articles folder (which it should have done on uninstall).

Okay, I've deleted everything pertaining to Articles (and also TinyMCE and another addon) from everywhere: plugins, categories, and also assets/components and core/components, and also the modex_site_content rows. The problem of the manager crashing is now gone.

Feeling brave (or foolish I then reinstalled Quip. I am now back to being able to comment. However, the look of the actual commenting form is a little different now in the styling? And no notification emails are being sent. (But I can successfully send email using the snippet I wrote to do so.)
