Most of you know and do, probably use wordpress for a Quick setup, still. Customer wants to cut back hours of work in development and design, so you take a theme for wordpress customise it, and for most things you need, sliders, forms, SEO, the works there's a plugin that is free for download.

Right now i am in doubt, if in Revolution it is possible to do a "quick" website setup. Because, really, i like modX better and better each day, for several reasons.

Example of a "quick" setup i need to do for a customer

-I have the theme/design including files already in plain HTML and CSS3 so i would have to integrate in modx.
-Needs several(80+) pages for every service/product a different one, divided in menu's
    -Need menu (with dropdown/submenu)
-need a slider for header(design is already there)
-Need a lightbox for product photo's
-Needs a Blog section as well
-SEO and pretty URL's (in WP i would use something like SEO by YOAST)
-An order form on every page for the service/product on that page. (name, last name, phone, email, quantity if applicable)(dynamic?)
-Simple contact form. (for questions) (name, email, phone)
-Making sure that the end user only has the right to edit page content.
    -Social media integration (twitter/facebook feed)

For such a "simple" website i normally would use wordpress to save time (wich is money), but is that the case, can't i be doing this quickly in Revo?

What are your views on this?

    Cheers

I think it can't be as fast and cheap as wordpress (if you are downloading/buying a template).
Still, setting this up in revo can be done in a day or two.

If you already have the html&css files for the templates, porting to modx will be easier,

I already have the template, customer wanted to have a theme from themeforrest (budget reasons) porting to modx is in that case easier, that's what made me think of this.

What i forgot to ask in my initial post, what tools/packages/plugins etc. are there to accomplish those basic things?
I know my fair share in the WP world, not yet in the modx world, i mostly have bigger sites running in modx that has everything tailor made. [ed. note: thapriest86 last edited this post 13 years, 1 month ago.]

          I would use:

          • Wayfinder for all the menus
          • For dropdown you can use jquery superfish or write a more simple script
          • For a slider I like jquery cycle 2 plugin (super easy to set up) and migx for the backend
          • For the lightbox you can use something like jquery colorbox/fancybox and phpthumbof/pthumb for thumb genration
          • Full featured blog can be done with the articles addon, a more simple blog can be done with getResources
          • friendly urls are easy to set up in modx, for most of the seo needs you can use tvs
          • For the forms use Formit
          • Limiting the user to editing just the content - form customization, user groups (this is not as simple as the other stuff)
          • For twitter feed you can use twitterx, I'm not sure about facebook

I find modx much quicker, because you are not messing about with lots of poorly written plugins! With modx cloud, I have a base install that I start from, ready to go with custom manager interface, user policies, common templates, packages, chunks, js, css etc..

Thanks nir-z! I will keep this list as a checklist.

@eighthday Are such pre-configured install up for download somewhere or did you build it yourself?
Because the only thing i see up aginst is the user policies stuff.

I decided i'd just do this one in modx and see what happens, i believe i will like it better.

They are custom installs I have created myself, modx cloud makes this very easy to do. Looks like the marketplace is taking shape, so hopefully I will be able to share/sell them soon! [ed. note: eighthday last edited this post 13 years, 1 month ago.]

You can make custom base configurations without MODX Cloud, using the Vapor package. http://sottwell.com/articles/modx-cloud/using-vapor.pdf

                      For those interested:

                      Update:

Importing theme was a breeze, twitterX works out of the box.
Made few adjustments to theme as i wanted to reuse same headers and footers so packed them up in re-usable snippets.

The above was done in an hour, maybe an hour and a half, tops. So till this far i can say yes, in modx you can build a website fast.

However(and that is because i need to learn it top to bottom), stumble upon wayfinder. The overload on information is so overwhelming, that i cannot seem to find a proper example of how to set it up to work with:

5 parents with each 3/4 children. Where obviously the parent needs to be the menu, and i want the children to drop down when hovered upon the parent. Anyone that knwos an example of such?
