First let me give you some info, I am using fat cow as my web hosting service with php 5.3.13 and MySQL 5.0.91. I am unsure how to continue from here. I get this when loading "/setup":

FATAL ERROR: MODX Setup cannot continue.

Make sure your PHP session configuration is valid and working

The previous error was about time zones which I had to modify in the php.ini file. I have looked through the php.ini file but everything looked fine (to me). I couldn't find anything in the troubleshooting guide so what is the next step from here? I thought it would a simple installation. I've used wordpress, drupal and other cms programs with no issues but this one actually forced me to edit the php.ini file and it's still not even working. Any pointers would be great, thanks for your time. And if you need some more info let me know.

*edit* I forgot to mention that while loading the root directory I get this error:

    503 Error
Could not load MODX config file

I clearly have the config file, I have not moved any files nor messed with any settings this is a fresh upload from the zipped download. [ed. note: kiasta last edited this post 14 years ago.]

Did you ftp the files to the server after unpacking them on your local machine?

If so, start over and unpack them on the server itself instead. FTP is known to miss or corrupt some files.

Yes, I used filezilla. The file manager for fatcow does not allow uploading directories, only files which is ridiculous to me. I hate ftp transfers myself because they are slow and not secure and full of errors. I will try to upload it through other means though, thanks for the suggestion.

Upload the MODX zip file to the server. On the server, either in the file manager or in some script in the server control panel for extracting files, run the extraction there.

Then copy the files out of the extracted folder into the root or subfolder where you wish to install MODX. You can delete the zip file and extraction folder from the server after you're done installing.

Ok I was able to unzip it with archive gateway, moved it to where it should be but it is still giving the same errors. Do I need to have it installed to root, can I not install it to a sub domain? I have wordpress installation in root and I want this installed to my development sub domain ex: http://development.mywebsite.com.

You can install it wherever you want to, MODX doesn't care where it's installed. You might want to check the file permissions though.

You deleted everything that you had uploaded earlier and re-installed from scratch, correct?

Yeah, I deleted everything before I re-uploaded. And as for installing from scratch I can't even install, going to the root: http://development.mywebsite.com shows the 503 error, and going to http://development.mywebsite.com/setup shows the FATAL ERROR. I'm using the basic installer, should I try the advanced installer?

Try just creating a subfolder, and installing there. It could have something to do with how your server sets up subdomains.

You'll be able to access the dev site through the path instead of the domain.yoursite.com. Unless there's some specific reason for a subdomain for dev install, it works just as well.
