I’m testing MODx on a test site to see if it will fit my needs. I came across the CMS a while back but haven’t had the need or chance to actually give it a go. I’m building a new network of sites and I’m trying to find the right CMS to get the job done. I like some of the options MODx has so I want to see if it will be a good solution for me.
First off I’m setting up a PC gaming news network. I plan to have a main hub site which will feature general news around my overall selected topics. that will be mydomain.com. I also plan to have child sites on specific games set up on sub domains (ie site1.mydomain.com, site2.mydomain.com) So question one is, are there any options that easily allow me to add and manage child sites or do I need to do a new MODx install for each child site.
Question number two, is about setting up my front pages. Are there any suggested news add ons, that allow me to easily set up and manage front page news style sites? I noticed the add on "News Manager" but doesn’t seem to be any example sites to look at, or much info other than whats listed in the description of it. So basically I’m just looking for some example sites of MODx being used as a news style site, so I can get an idea of what the CMS can do. Seems most of the sites I find look more blogish rather than news oriented. I’m looking to do my sites something similar to this ( bf2.totalgamingnetwork.com )
Question 3 is about the admin. I notice when working in the admin, when I first log in I see the full navigation set up for MODx. However if I click for example "Site> New Document" I’m then taken to a sub page, with no way to get back to the original menu system, other than hitting my back button. If I click save it just takes me to a sub menu page with no real way to get back where I started. Is there a way to always have to full menu system, because it’s somewhat annoying having to hit back or re-log in to get the full menu system back.

1. There are some hacks available for working with sub-domains; future releases of MODx will include support for multi-sites and sub-sites in a variety of configurations, but the current releases do not support this by default.
2. Ditto is what you are looking for.
3. The current manager is implemented in 3 frames; the top frame always contains the navigation, so I’m not sure what you mean here.
He might be talking about a problem I’ve run into and previously reported. Sometimes when you click on something in the manager which changes the main frame (where the lists of snippets, document editing takes place, etc.) then the page reloads without the other frames. The only way to get the document tree and tabs back is to reload the main manager page.
When I previously reported this rthrash wondered if it was a Firefox plugin that was causing the problem. However I recently was giving a demo of MODx to a prospective client using IE 7 on their PC and it did the same thing. Very annoying.
I can’t see to find where I originally mentioned this problem. Not sure if it was a bug report in flyspray or a forum post. If I go into flyspray I can’t see a list of everything I have reported for some reason.

Yes, that is what I have seen on two PCs, one running Firefox the other running IE7...

Are there specific steps to make this happen? I am using Fx and IE 6 and 7 on two different PC’s and have never seen this behavior.
