Hi all, trying to clarify how a 'site package' is set up.
I'm considering buying the Stimulus site template over at theme forest.
Somebody complained in the discussions there that the templates are stored in the database, mainly because he need them for Evo instead of Revo.

I'm a little unsure, would I have to do anything special to be able to edit the templates as hard files, would, could or should they be stored in the database. Just wondering how accessible anyone thinks the templates would be if I purchase this site package to use for Revo as intended, I'm just a little confused as a new user to Revo.
I would plan to edit the templates quite a bit, possibly via ftp maybe even?

    Thanks,

I'd say wait till the html version is added, which should be soon according to the last comment.

Or, if you're going to do a lot of design changes just install one of the site packages from package management such as boilerX or Flexibility. Or use Anselm Hannemann's modx-boilerplate http://anselm-hannemann.com/blog/2011/03/18/free-template-modx-boilerplate/

The above packages are free, btw.

Edit: I do agree with the commenters that any site package should include html files. Using static files makes this simple and effective for a site package. [ed. note: frogabog last edited this post 14 years, 2 months ago.]

Just buy the template install it and once you have it installed you can use HTTrack to scrape the site and get HTML files and then integrate it with MODX.

I've used this method for any template be it wordpress, drupal or joomla templates that don't have HTML files, just install it on the CMS and scrape it with HTTrack you get a full working local HTML site which you can then integrate into MODX.

I might do a tutorial for this some day on CMSTricks.

        Good luck.

I managed to get the template author to post the documentation.
It looks like there was an option to import his complete database, Option 1 here:
          http://stimulus.modxtemplates.com.au/Documentation/#!/getting_started

Do you think a newbie will struggle to setup anything in the MODX control panel, maybe it's very straight foreward?

Seems like option 2 is the most straight forward version, just install the package file via MODX package manager and put the assets in the proper directory.

            Good luck.

Hey all, just checked back on the comments of that template theme.
The author says using option #1 would get you an exact mirror copy.

                @benmarte says do option #2.
                ----------------------------------------

modx-templates REPLIED over on themeforest thread:
                http://themeforest.net/item/stimulus-responsive-html5-modx-template/discussion/2601247

When you install the transport package, all you get is the Templates, TV’s & chunks. You can’t include resources in a transport package. If you want the resources you can only install using option 1 and then you will get an exact mirror of the demo site.

I guess is what I am not getting is in MODX what a 'Resource' is?
                http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Resources is the technical definition.

Can anybody clarify what all would need setup, without doing the exact mirror copy, which I guess is option #1?? I really need a sample sort of site, with some posts and page populated pretty much like the demo there would be great.

Taking into account, I already have a brand new Revo clean version install up and running.....

Going the Option #2 route, is it really just as easy as uploading the Assets folder, to get the mirror site up and running.
Sorry for the st-oo-pid questions, just trying be sure, I could get some sort of demo site up and running with the templates. I think I'm confused by the use of the term resources on this one is where I'm at.

                Thanks once again.

You most certainly can include resources in a transport package. Look at Flexibility, in the repository. It contains resources.

I don't know how he does it though. Might check with Menno Pietersen at http://designfromwithin.com.

If you can wait a bit, the new MyComponent extra will be out. It will package everything for you fairly easily, including Resources and Templates -- pretty much everything but users and permission stuff, which (hopefully) will be added later. It will also export everything from a local MODX install and create *all* the build files and resolvers for you.

Once things are installed, you can set any element (including Templates) to static and the element will use a file for it's content, which you can edit or FTP whenever you want.

To answer your initial question. By default, MODX keeps all elements and resources in the DB, but any element can be set to static in the Manager and it will then use a file for the content. Resources can be converted to static Resources. It's a little more complicated, but quite doable.

Looking forward to your new MyComponent extra Bob. For development purposes, that sure would simplify moving a site from local to a server. Permissions aside, which could be reproduced if not too complex... using a package to install a site on a fresh server install would be quite awesome.

Not to mention all the possibilities it opens up for templating full MODX sites. If there's anything missing from MODX, it's templates and full sites. For a beginner, seeing TV's, snippets, and chunks in action is the best way to learn MODX. I use Flexibility this way and I love it because I can build from the ground up, but it seems as if most people want a styled template like the other CMS offer.
