So I solved it for me, anyway - see if this works for you:
First check line 59 in ~/core/components/cliche/models/cliche/helpers/fileuploaderclass.php
if ($postSize < $this->config['sizeLimit']){
should be
if ($postSize > $this->config['sizeLimit']){
Then make sure line ~40 (ish) in the same file is correctly reflecting your cliche system settings for upload size.
And then make sure that you have your main Modx system setting for max upload size high enough.
Here's the part that messed me up: Make sure that your php.ini setting for 'max_upload_size' is the same as your max_upload_size for cliche. My cliche upload size is set to 8388608, as is my modx system upload size setting, so I set the upload size limit in php.ini to 8M.
It seems like it all has to match. Don't know why, or even if it's correct, but this is the only way it will function for me.

I'm using Cliche too and it's failed on my server when I upload small size pictures. On my local env it works fine. I also fixed the size in the code but still get error cliche.upload_max_filesize.
I think I just have to switch back to Gallery then, despite I like the experience using Cliche very much.
