Greetings, I hope this is the correct place to ask.

Got a new client who would like to use ModX and I need to install Modx in the root directory. Problem is, ther is already a ’manager’ folder in the root directory that is created by the web host, and uses as the server account login. Can I rename Modx’ manager something else?

    thanks!

There is no configuration parameter available for now, but you can achieve this by searching and replacing the "manager" in all source files, BUT its just an idea, I never done it myself so I think you should wait for someone expert at the topic. tongue

        Thank you Zi,

I was thinking it maybe easier to ask client move the server to a new host grin . The one she has is way too slow and pricy.

It might also be an option to find out if you can remove the hosts folder. It could be for something you don’t need. I find that I don’t usually need or want the web tools that hosts offer.

Thanks for the thought, but this is not an option on my part because the ’manager’ folder is assigned by the web host for server login , something like the cpanel, where you login to create database, email account and do many other things. It may not even be viable for the webhost to rename it, because, why a web host wants to accommodate the customer simply because she chooses to use a CMS that needs a ’manager’ in the root dirctory? On the other hand, so many CMSs use ’manager’ as admin login, maybe something for CMS developers and web hosts to consider, so that no one get in the way of other.

I have client explained the situation to her web host, and told her it can’t be solved, she will have to move the server, or drop the idea to use Modx or other CMS.

Well, it seems swapping hosts will probably be the easiest. If she has a site there already that can actually be pretty handy since you can do the dev off the IP of the new site and just swap your DNS when your ready to lauch the new version. Then just cancel the old one after a few days for the DNS to switch over.

We use westhost for our clients, which also has a manager directory at the root level. Worse, their manager dir is owned by root, so you can’t change its name or anything. Our solution is to simply redirect index.html to /modx .

We’ll even give the modx directory clever names to help with seo.

Ah yah! Westhost is it laugh
Do you feel the server is unbearable slow than other popular shared hosting web hosts such as Dreamhost and Bluehost. My site is hosted in Dreamhost and I can really tell the differences in terms of speed.

Client said she recently renewed and upgraded to Business Value package, and is a bit unwilling to move the server.

Modx is currently installed in subdirectory: clientdomain.com/modx, and due to the slow speed, I can hardly get any job done. Is there disadvantages for index.html redirect?

                    Thanks!

Hi, thought I share this info with you, client’s web host, Westhost is very accommodating, it changed the ’manger’ for server login to ’manager2’ after my client passed my message, now I am able to move Modx to root directorry. It’s a good customer service!
