Up until my MODX discovery last year I was using Dreamweaver for the majority of my sites.

I'm still using Dreamweaver as an expensive code editor for building a template before I paste it into MODX.

Thinking ahead I'll probably want to replace Dreamweaver because

    • I want to get off the treadmill of annual upgrades/tax payable to Adobe
    • Early previews of Windows 8 mean if I want to escape the tablet interface I need an editor that I could run anywhere - maybe an online editor

What's everyone else using for code editing?

I've been using RapidPHP for a few years now, and get on quite well with it. I link to editing in MODX (Evo) via Firefox's It's All Text extension,

The program handles PHP, HTML (now including HTML5) and CSS with just the level of sophistication that suits me, i.e. not too much. Certainly cheap enough to be worth trying it out.

It also allows direct editing of uploaded files via FTP - handy for an urgent fix to a single file, experiments with CSS, or updates to "deny from" lists in .htaccess, for instance.

There's a few Free ones that give dreamweaver a run for it's money or are way better.

Aptana has a Dreamweaver kind of look and feel but has some more advanced features and integration with frameworks than Dreamweaver, and is free.

Notepad++ is also another free editor but this one is geared more towards coders and has some pretty awesome multiline selection features and other framework integration and plugins too.

Also their site runs on MODx so they are awesomer.

I've recently swapped from Dreamweaver to Eclipse with the PDT extension and XDebug so I can add breakpoints and view variables on the fly. It's free too, but a little bit tricky to set up. Eclipse is an awesome code editing interface for Mac and PC, I'd never go back to Dreamweaver.

It's hard to find good tutorials on getting started with Eclipse and PDT but if anyone's interested I'd be happy to outline the process here. [ed. note: jaylearn last edited this post 15 years, 1 month ago.]

I use BBEdit, and really love it - but I think you are using Windows so this is probably only of academic interest!
Never coded with a Windows machine so do not feel qualified to make further comments.

I have coded with Dreamweaver many years ago - went to BBEdit and never looked back, no further comment needed!

Thanks for all the input, I'll check them out.

Meanwhile I've found https://kodingen.com. Not sure if it's really ready yet but the day is beckoning when I'll junk my pc and be using a tablet or Chromebook

On Windows I love notepad++ and the 1000 ways you can customize it,
                  On Linux I love Bluefish.

+1. Absolutely the best. Free for Open Source work, about $100 otherwise (and definitely worth every penny).
