I am relatively new to Modx following the departure of my IT guy and i need some support on a basic issues:

How do i change the name of the MODX site from what it is now to my main domain?
I tried to amend a template design that had been done for me and saved the changes to see what it would look like - now when i try to revert back to the previous template i just get the saving function constantly running but it does not revert back to template - what should i do?
Is there anyway to drag and drop or move images that are stored in the wrong location other than deleting them and the uploading them again?
I have got some websites on the MODX account that i want to store for a while whilst i work on the main ones - is there any way to separate these and just have the main ones showing other than deleting them?

What version of ModX are you using, because how you do this differs between Evolution and Revolution

          OK here we go then

How do i change the name of the MODX site from what it is now to my main domain?
This is set in the site_name system setting see the video here on how these work http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/System+Settings

How are you trying to revert back, did you keep a copy of the original code, since MODx at this time doesn't track changes.

Is there anyway to drag and drop or move images that are stored in the wrong location other than deleting them and the uploading them again?
Not sure one this I use an FTP client for moving files around, I just tried dracging and dropping in the manager but it doesn't seem to work

Are these websites seperate contexts on different domains? when you click on system->contexts what do you see in the table that is displayed

Regarding the template issue, I've seen a similar issue with saving resources, if I understand what you're saying correctly - it sounds like you made a different template, switched the resource to the new template, and now you're trying to switch it back to the template it started with, right? You might try clearing the cache (Site->Clear Cache) right before changing the template, that sometimes seems to help me.

You might also upgrade to the latest version (be sure to back everything up first!), because there have been some changes that might help - having said that, I'm running the latest version and I still have trouble saving sometimes. Clearing the cache, switching the template, and then saving seems to work for me.

You might want to leave off upgrading just now since the latest version got old of some old legacy code so if your developer wrote any custom snippets it might break them, if he used any legacy code. Lets get the basics going again first and then check if upgrading is do able

Was able to change the site name but will need to change the shared/domain from the old one to new one
I cleared the Cache and tried to save but still it went through the constant saving issue. What i had done was make a duplicate of of an existing template and i tried to revert back back just changing the "uses template" section on the page editor then pressed save
Under the systems/contexts every domain is listed separately

mmm ok so the domain name isn't even pointing at the site at the moment is that what your saying- this is to do with your hosting then rather than ModX

ok in that case on the tree list on the left of the manager page you need to right click on each domain. Then edit context.
then you need the context settings tab.
Hopefully he created a setting under here called Site Status if it's there then set it to no and this will take the site offline. If it's not there then
                  1) click Create New
                  2)key = site_status
                  3)name = Site Status
                  4)Field Type = Yes/No
                  5)Area Lexicon Entry = site

Leave the other fields either blank or default.

                  6) Click Save

now under the context settings tab for that context set the site to No to take it offline or yes for online.

You will need to do this for each domain.

I will say that if you have multiple sites using contexts you have quite a complex setup to try and learn ModX using.

Thanks for that - It seems that i am going to be undergoing a very steep learn curve over the coming weeks - Do you know how change the way the context of the resource folder (domain name) can be changed - I have looked in the contexts but can't see how to do it other than changing the description but can't find out how to change the key (folder identity)

Context names can't be changed that I know of. In the past I have just created a new context and drag and dropped all the resources in to it.

Anyway to help on your learning curve take a look at these sites

rtfm.modx.com - The official docs (but not always the best at this moment in time)
http://bobsguides.com/ - Bob has some of the best guides/tuts going in my opinion I used these a lot when starting out and still do for that matter
                      http://modxvideotutorials.com/
                      http://modx-linx.net/

And of course the forums here.

On the saving issue the best way would be to upgrade but you need to be aware if there are any custom snippets/plugins in stalled if you can list those for us we can see if they are compatible.
