Where can I find the best documentation online for MODx? From what has been made available to me as of yet, it’s not very detailed or thorough. I just set my MODx site up, along with the SMF bridge. All I want to do is get the log-in and registration working. I know about embedding the snippets and what not, but I can’t find more detailed information of getting ones such as log in and registration to work after they’ve been embedded. Also, MODx has appeared to slow my site down, anyone know any tweaks I can make to speed things up? Also, where can I go for the best MODx documantation? Thanks fellow MODx’ers, Josh wink

Where can I find the best documentation for integrating snippets into MODx so they function smoothly throughout the entire site?

Thread merged, this reply is to the second question

I have no idea what your question means. They typically either work or don’t...

Sorry, let me try to clarify myself. Basically, where can I find the most extensive and thorough documentation regarding MODx available?

            That would be it :
            http://modxcms.com/documentation.html

Though the forums contain way more knowledge about making the most out of MODx..

You can speed things up a little by turning visitor logging off. Much will depend on your webhost too. Shared hosting accounts will always run a little slower than the rest.

@futurist : True, most opensource projects favor wikis to document their software. The "wiki option" has been discussed a lot inside the team. There are those who are for it and those against it. So far, we have used MODx powered documentation, and it’s not (yet) opened to public contributions. But openning access to would be contributors would not be harder with MODx than with a wiki. The only thing you’d lack is revisionning (at least for now tongue).

From my experience running the french doc @TextBook (the Textpattern doc), wiki have pros and cons. The main con that you hear from users is learning a new syntax, which, to write technical doc can be more annoying that relatively simple text (inserting images, with MediaWiki, was not an easy process if you wanted those hosted on the documentation’s server... you had to have a FTP access on top of wiki privileges...). Back at Textpattern, people would have favored Textile since it’s native syntax to edit documents. I had suggested Instiki or DocuWiki, who can both use Textile or Markdown.

Also, opening contributions to the public means you have enough people who regularly fix vandalized pages, but also you have to have several "editors" so to speak to ensure coherence and smoothen out inexperienced writers personnal styles... I have done it for a year, it’s major work if you want a consistent and quality documentation.

My personnal take on this is : keep MODx as the documentation tool, and open documentation to people ready to get involved, but not make documentation editable by anyone. We don’t have enough resources to handle this...

IMHO, the tool is important in the sense that it does not get in the way of people’s involvement and makes their life easier, but it’s not so much the tool that matters - rather the way we choose to use it.

I would like to see the wiki to become reality. Often i have wished that i’d have rights to edit the pages and iron something out or update info etc. If it would be easy to do, i would think that many people are willing to contribute and add tutos of snippet usage etc.. I don’t know what would it hurt to have one? Even if just for testing atfirst along side with the official docs. But i guess that as long as Ryan is against the wikis in general, it’s not gonna happen wink

Actually, that’s exactly how we proceeded for the french translation of the doc, wiki was used for draft, and then transferred to the website.
