Help for newbie

Hello Everyone -

I have just started a job where I am managing a website - know nothing of modx, and our tech support options are limited. My familiarity is with wordpress, blogging, but not with this application.

I need to upload a video to our website - I have the embedding code from the videographer on a site other than youtube- I am just unsure on the WYSWYG editor what the steps are for embedding.

Am I better off uploading the video file to the site, or uploading to youtube first and then embedding? And am I looking at Flash or Windows Media?

I would upload it to YouTube and then embed it to your site. This way you don’t take up unnecessary space on your webhost.

But then again that is my personal preference. Others might have different opinion.

I can not understand precisely the answer from FAQ. My technical background is mainly frontend, and my english understanding serves me in most cases OK but sometimes I’m stuck. ...like now.

Here is the quote from FAQ:

The reason why I’m asking:
we have a medium size News Portal build on some custom CMS from the stone age with more than 6000 posts in the database (MS Access) which we would like to migrate to MySQL and convert for use with MODx.
Is this limitation MODx have, specified in the FAQ answer (5000 docs) relevant to our intetions, and what this limitation really means?

The 0.9.6 (Evolution) system starts to slow down enough to be a problem at around 5,000 documents. This is primarily because of the filesystem caching used to reduce database access. The Revolution system uses totally different efficiency mechanisms, so this limit is avoided.

If you store the old documents in external db tables or files (which not get cached as modx documents) and
then use/customize snippets to read from those tables/files the problem is solved.

Susan and MrHaw thanks for your help. It’s clearer now. I have 2 options now. Revolution or Snippet.

I dont know which one is best for our project but I would choose Revolution if there is a stable release, otherwise I’ll have to hire someone for snippet job . I’m not so comfortable with PHP code.

We’re still not in the hurry with the project and If  stable Revolution come out as expected then problem is solved, if not I’ll searh for help.

That is my difficulty. In the CMS Editor, where do you paste the code? And do I need to create a TV?

I’m pasting embed code, and it shows in the preview. I save the page, and then when I preview, there is nothing. Nothing.

The file is 44 MB - it is a 2 minute clip. Tried to upload it, and it ain’t happening.

Called the company that took the site over for hosting from the folks who originally created it who are out of business - was told for $200 an hour they could arrange a training. The previous trainings they arranged for staff are slow, basic, and useless.

I just need 10 minutes with someone who can tell me what buttons to push. Any options for that, anyone know of real tech support for modx? If we have to spend money, I would rather spend it for results than more waste.

I also need to learn about adding items to the site for foxycart - guess that is a different thread.

Worst case, we’ll just link the blog to youtube, but that is not nearly the impact of having the embedded video on the page.

There’s quite a few addons there (some 4 pages) that can deal with embedded, youtube, etc videos. Hopefully one of them would be helpful?
