I’m sure I’m going to end up looking stupid, but ...

This is my first time installing MODx. My environment is:

    - WinXP Professional
    - IIS 5.1
    - MySQL 5.0.18

So I fire up the MODx install script. I leave the database name and table prefix at their default values, then enter the following:

    Database host: localhost
    Database login name: root
Database password: <The value I entered when installing mqSql>

When I click [Test Connection], I receive the following: Connection to host: failed!

I’ve run the mysqlshow and mysql commands against the mySql instance, and it seems to connect fine. What an I missing?

    Thanks,
    Preston

Preston, if you haven’t already created the database, the Test Connection will always fail, as it’s testing a connection to the actual database name you are providing there. But no worries, if you continue the install, it should attempt to create the database for you (it will tell you if it was successful or not) during the installation process.

I’ll see if we can’t find a way to make that clearer during the install process.

Bad username, hostname, password (or the database isn’t running):
        Connection to host: failed!

Database needs to be created (if the user has permissions, the installation will create it):
Connection to host: passed... Checking database: failed - testing does not exist!

Well, it took me most of the evening but I finally got the connection issue resolved. Took so long because I’ve really only dabbled here and there with PHP and mySQL. Anyway, I’ve got PHP 4.4.2 and mySQL 5. I finally used mysql_error() to get the reason for the connection failure:

"Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

Once I had that it was pretty easy to find the solution at:

          http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/old-client.html

I guess I could’ve saved myself a lot of time by using PHP 5. Well, now I can at least proceed with the rest of the MODx installation.

          Thanks,
          Preston

              hi,

              i have the same problem,

              my environment:

WAMP : windows, Apache 2.2.11, MySQL, PHP 5.3.0
I am trying to install modx in wamp, i am stuck at the check db connection step, it won’t let me go thru with out the connection being tested. which doesn’t seem to happen.

i know though the connection functions since the wamp installation was successful and i have other sites running.

              any pointers?

Have you tried creating a database with phpMyAdmin and using that one?

What symptoms did you see before using mysql_error()?

BTW, what you saw is only supposed to happen with PHP < 4.1.1 so there maybe there was something else wrong with your PHP configuration.

i did create a new db using phpadmin. when i go thru the install page for MODX i come to a page with this...

                    Database Information
                    Server connection and login information

Enter the database host (server name or IP address), the username and password before testing the connection.
                    Database host:

Database login name: "would be the name in my WAMP setup"

Database password: "same password as in the WAMP setup"

→ Test database server connection and view collations.

now i have done this and cant click on the test db server connection!

                    nothing happens!

what more can i do? any pointers are welcome...

What server name are you using? Sometimes 127.0.0.1 won’t work, while localhost will.
