I have many french users reporting install problems with a free hosting service (a french DSL provider named "Free"), and I am trying to understand what goes wrong. I asked them to post a phpinfo() file on their server and noticed safe_mode is ON. You can check one
there
Surprised I didn’t find a reference to this, or requirements for MODx somewhere, but
can MODx run with safe_mode ON ? Idem for register_globals ?
Thanks !

As far as I know, it shouldn’t be a problem; it’s possible that some badly-written snippets won’t work, but I haven’t found any code that wasn’t safe_mode compatible.
Nice to know
I wonder where this error :
mysql_num_rows(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /path_to_root/install/instprocessor.php on line 288
comes from... We have know 4 people from Free having this problem at install, and I didn’t find any reference to something similar in the english forums.
My guess was this is from the hosting’s php configuration... or a problem caused by users themselves (I’ll make sure it’s not).

Hm. What it’s trying to do here is insert the chunks into the database. It’s checking to see if a chunk of that name already exists; if yes it uses an UPDATE query, if not it uses an INSERT query. The error is occuring when checking the results of the SELECT query to see if the chunk already exists.
It looks like that SELECT query isn’t getting run at all, which means the $rs doesn’t exist, and the mysql_num_rows($rs) function is complaining.
Have you heard this from anyone who is installing the minimal setup?
Thanks Susan, I plan to do a bug report but as usual I do some investigating first...
You already saved me some time... I am currently doing an install myself on this hosting to check if it’s not user-related.
Edit :
OK it’s a permission problem, see

Hi David,
You might also want to check if the system is creating the database.
On of the strange thing that I’ve noticed is that PHP5 failed when the mysql_create_db() function is called.
This at times results is a blank page during install. It’s very odd as any reference to mysql_create_db will cause the version that I’ve tested to fail.
Thanks Raymond, the database is created alright, and "Free DSL" is not running PHP5.

I’m getting the same warning. And thereby the Rich Editor isn’t working. Looks like the script is killed after this warning.
Have you found a solution already?
It was not a permission problem in my case, but a path problem. See see

I attached Susan’s modified manager/index.php which you can download there. Also there are some path to edit in accesscontrol.inc.php and in your language file (see post for details).
Hope it helps
