I’m new to CMSs and I’ve been using Modx for 2 days now, I have it installed in MAMP on my Mac, however I can only preview the site start page.

Friendly URLs are turned on in the System Settings and appear to be working when you hover over links in the browser though when you click on them it says ’Not found. The requested URL /friends.html was not found on this server.’

I think maybe I need to do something with the htaccess file, but what and how? Please could someone spell it out for me? Please smiley

Any help would be most gratefully received.

I use MAMP for local development and also came unstuck with furls on my first few attempts tongue

If your local site is in a folder (eg. http://localhost:8888/mySite), you’ll need to set your base path correctly in .htaccess file:
      RewriteEngine On
      RewriteBase /mySite

See how you go with that for starters...

Thanks very much for your suggestion Lucas.

My local site isn’t in a sub folder, it’s directly in the htdocs folder. However, my .htaccess file is still called ’ht.access’. I’m not sure what I need to do with that file?

You could rename the ht.access to .htacess but I prefer to make a copy and rename the copy to .htaccess, this way I still have the original in case I muck things up

Also note that when you save it as ’.htaccess’ it will disappear from Finder as it will now be classed as a hidden file.

To open it again, use File > Open in your text editor and hit ’cmd + shift + . ’ to temporarily view hidden files.

Thanks. If I try to rename ht.access to .htaccess it says:

’You cannot use a name that begins with a dot ".", because these names are reserved for the system. Please choose another name.’

Try ’Save As...’ from your text editor instead - you will be prompted but it should still allow you to proceed and save with the ’.’

Sometimes i have trouble with this as well. open ht.access, copy the contents, then paste them into a new file using textedit or textwrangler and the save that new file as .htaccess. It will warn you that the file will be hidden but it should work

WOOO HOOOO! It’s working, you guys are brilliant. Thank you.

One more question while I’m here please...

Do you know if it’s possible to drop ’.html’ from the modx urls?

The urls are like this: http://www.mysite.com/friends.html

I would like more user friendly urls without the .html if possible, like so: http://www.mysite.com/friends (this url does work already if you put it directly into the browser, though links add .html)

                    Thank you.

For MODx Revolution, go into System->Content Types, and for the HTML content type simply remove the extension. Double click on the field to make it editable.
