First of all hi! I’m quietly using modX for a few month now and loving it. I’m quite a n00bish at php/mysql but in order to learn php a re-done an old "get-topics" script. (some like phpBB fetchall - basic). it’s quite in development right now and I’m testing new things every day. But before i go any further i would like some feedback of things i could do better. if you have some ideas (which a php n00b can do/learn) please add them. Also i have not much clue if it’s save enough to use in a live site.

). Please make sure you fill in all items in the ’config’ section. A side note: you mySQL tables has to have the standard prefix: "phpbb_" if this is not the case edit the 3 SQL connection (example: if your prefix is forum_ change phpbb_users to forum_users. )

For the people don’t know how to find the id of a certain forum: follow the link of the forum you want to include, then look at the url: http://crea-design.nl/test/viewforum.php?f=1 f=1 so id=1 and so on.

Params:

&forumid --> ID of the forum (in phpBB) in which you want to fetch the post (default=1).
&numberoftopics --> Number of posts you want to include.(default=5)
&maxchar --> Max number of characters (don’t call it for full article)
&language --> The language of the snippet (support for Dutch and English only at this time)

Example call:

  [+topicTitle+] --> Topic Title
  [+topicDate+]  --> Date of publishing the topic

  [+userRank+]   --> The rank of a user
  [+userEmail+]  --> User Email (in text so make link with html command mailto)

Looks really nice, good job! I would like to see a possibility to use a chunk as a template for the output format, Eg. make placeholders for the topic_id, topic_title, topic_poster, topic_time, topic_replies, topic_first_post_id fields (example here).. so something like:

thnx Doze for all those tips, i now understands placeholders and so on. Added some more: like signature support, Topic Poster Email and Poster Rank. the next update will be a bit bigger with hopefully the support of usergroups.

Yesterday I was trying to do a snippet which supports placeholders/templates ... it took me way to much time and had no result ;-( but your description in this thread really helps!
If you do some small changes to your post it could serve as a really cool "placeholders/templates tutorial" for the wiki?

I know, I should spend the time to write it up ... but I have to learn (about php and the English language) a little bit more before I can do it ... if nobody else does it, I will – but not right now ...

I modified the snippet by RWQ a little bit. It now works for my phpbb3 installation. If anyone has time to test it for downwards compatibility feel free to do so. It would be interesting tif it still works with phpbb 2.x.
