Adding snippets

Can anybody help me with the creation of a news snippet and a maxigallery snippet.I’ve read thouroughly and nothing worked for me.HELP!!!!

I’m afraid we’ll need to know more about what you did before we can help you.

I’m assuming that you just want to use existing snippets rather than writing your own.

For a typical news set up, you need to create a container document that holds all your news articles. Then you create documents in that container either by hand, or (preferably) with the NewsPublisher snippet. That means you also need a document called "create new news story" or the like, that’s listed in the menu. That document will have a call to [[NewsPublisher]] with the appropriate parameters.

Then you have another document (perhaps your home page) that’s meant to display the news summaries. It simply has a call to the Ditto snippet [[Ditto]] with the appropriate parameters.

If you’ve done all that and it didn’t work, you need to post your actual snippet calls so we can check them out.

You should probably get the news thing working before you worry about MaxiGallery.

i think my problem is adding the parameters to the code.I need a broad view on adding these parameters.If you can give me a simple overview on this issue.Thanx

What are you trying to achieve. BobRay asked to get more information but you have note added any to this thread.

1. Are you asking for help in using a snippet in your templates or documents?
2. Are you asking for help in modifying the snippet code to make it do something that it is not able to do via configuration of the snippet, templates or parameters?

What we need to help you is for you to describe what result you hope to end up with, E.g.
"I want to have my Maxigallery images show up on the same page as my ditto news items"

If you are having trouble getting the snippets to work you should paste your snippet call as you have it in your document and possibly a screen capture of the output if you are seeing rendering problems and can’t describe them.

It is far better to put too much in your question vs. too little.

i am new to programming in php and i am trying my hands on creating my own cms with modx.I dont know how to configure these snippets in the my documents. The tutorials on the modx site on snippet is not fully understandable by me.I need to know the kind of parameters needed to configure a simple snippet.
eg, i want to be able to publish news stories on my site.
2. And be able to have a photo gallery page.

Or u can configure a modx cms which has a maxi gallery and a news publisher , bundle it and send it 2 me thru email.my address is [email protected].

We’re trying to be helpful here, but we are users of MODx just like you. People here try to help each other solve problems, but asking us to create a site for you is a little much unless you’re willing to pay for our time. And just saying, "I don’t understand snippet parameters" doesn’t help very much because we could write pages and pages about snippet parameters that might not be what you need.

Also, you shouldn’t need to use ANY PHP to do what you’ve described.

Let’s start with something really simple. Please answer these questions for us:

Have you installed MODx?

Do you have a working MODx web site? (one that you can visit with a browser and see the home page).

There is pretty clear instructions in MaxiGallery wiki page on how to use it. I suggest to visit there, if you haven’t seen that yet.

I have installed modx but haven’t hosted it yet on an active server.I still have a lot of editing and polishing to do.
Thats why i’m asking for help.I dont need y’all to create my site for me, I only need directions

I would do two things.

One: Install MODx with the default data to see how the snippets and chunks and templates work.
Two: CLEARLY state what outcome or result that you would like to achieve. (you have sort of done that).

As BobRay mentioned we are all users--I am not even very good at php--there is a learning curve and you will have to read pages of docs and forum posts over time.

The way I learned is by getting one thing to work well and then seeing if any others had done it as well.

Finally, one piece of advice that might find you better results is: if after reading the documentation for the snippets you are trying to use you go to the forum specifically for that snippet and post a question you will likely have people who can help you out more quickly (provided you have done the two things I mentioned above.) This thread really should have been started within one of the forums located here http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/board,163.0.html .

If you are looking for some real basic stuff like how to even call a snippet the syntax is always the same [[SnippetName]] or [!SnippetName!] and [[SnippetName? &parameterName=`paramvalue`]] or [!SnippetName? &parameterName=`paramvalue`!]. That is all listed in the documentation. BUT I have to say that many of the snippet docs leave this information out--assuming that you already know this.

Congratulations on getting MODx installed. I’m sure you’ll like it once you get used to how things are done in MODx.

It has a pretty simple MaxiGallery page and a summary of news articles on the home page. The poster asked for a blog, but the steps should work for what you want.

SmashingRed’s advice is right on. If you follow the steps and add the snippet calls described in that post, you should ask further questions in the forum for each snippet you’re having trouble with.
