Preview changes on resource before saving

I’m using Revolution 2.0.6-pl2 traditional and I’ve noticed that the Preview button on editing resources doesn’t work as I would expect.
Normally a preview function lets you preview your changes before actually publishing them on the website. In MODx, I can only preview a page after I have saved it. If I hit the preview button before saving, I don’t see the changes in the preview and therefore it has no use.

My clients would like to see what their changes ’will look like’ before they save them and make the actual change on the website. I think in other content management systems, preview does work this way. Even in this forum the preview function works this way.

Is this the intended behaviour of the preview button? And does anyone know if there’s a way to make a preview function the way I described above?
I’ve thought about the option to let users first set the resource to unpublished and then preview, but that’s not a good solution because it would mean you would constantly be unpublishing pages that you are editing (which are part of your website).

That’s a valid point. I just tried it, and while editing, "Preview" doesn’t show you what your page would look like. It’s only good for previewing a saved page, and it could be argued that this isn’t much of a preview. I suppose you could set your page as unpublished, save it, and then preview, but that seems pretty lame. I agree with you.

I’m using 2.07-pl. Wow, at least I can set parentage on my documents today - it didn’t work yesterday, even after clearing the cache, clearing my browser cache, and so on. Weird, and I hope that is more locked down in later releases. They’re currently trying to get the Revo Manager to work faster, and I guess that funny little things will happen while they’re pursuing that.

Good point. The real preview function will come with some kind of workflow/revisioning, but I think we can rename this button to "View"?

I believe it already was renamed to view in the latest version.

I understand this is a beast, are there any plans to add some sort of workflow, even if it is extremely basic? I’m just curious as I don’t see any mention in the roadmap.

I read in another thread that Babel may be able to offer some sort of workflow, even if it isn’t a true workflow. Maybe the community can implement such functionality via an addon. When I get a moment I may look into babel as I too have clients that are looking for some sort of preview function.

I mentioned a "context-Babel" solution but this is no real solution.
I don’t think it can be made with a plugin. It could be done and maybe it works somehow, but I’m sure it doesn’t work very well.

Yes, there are plans for supporting many kinds of workflow, once native content versioning is implemented. The roadmaps will be updated shortly with a more accurate look at the short and long-term features planned for MODX Revolution.

Okay, in german translation it’s actually labeled as "Vorschau" (="preview"). I think it didn’t made the round that it had been renamed. ;-)

Oh, I see, the Site -> Preview was relabeled for 2.0.7, but the button when editing a Resource still said preview in the 2.0.7 release. It has been relabeled since and will reflect this in the next release.
