Ditto 1.0

Meet NewsListing’s successor Ditto! Its based off of NewsListing 6.4.2 with a lots of changes and new features. The first edition will remain in snippet form and the next major revision will be a class.

Can everyone try this out at their earliest convience as I would like to release it tomorrow. Thanks!

Note: It is not fully backwards compatible with NewsListing (&summarize=`0` with &showarch=`1` will produce a archive and &summarize=`all` will show all) and cannot be used on the same page as NewsListing. Also, I still have a few more variables to change from true/false to 0/1 as well as renaming (showarch to archive for example).

I really think we should allowing the mixing of NL and Ditto on the same page.

I have a feature request for the next version. I recently hacked NewsListing 6.3.3 to support JSONP. It was pretty simple really since it’s so similar to RSS. I can send you my hacked version if you like.

For those who haven’t heard of JSONP it’s basically JSON with callback support (JSON with padding)

For those who have not heard of JSON it’s a javascript-friendly, lightweight, XMLish format.

What JSONP does is it allows for cross-domain "AJAX" which makes it great for pulling "RSS" feeds in through javascript.

It all sounds complicated and the documentation isn’t great but it’s really amazingly simple. If you need help understanding it just let me know.

Only tested in Firefox though. It’s only meant to run internally for anonucement screens we have around campus. Still at demo stage with a bug or two to work out too.

Very cool implementation for Kiosk Mode Adam... I think it would make a spectacular addition to Ditto.

Adam, could you provide me with your code so I can merge the changes into Ditto?

I have tested this out some with some basic tests and everything seems to be working great! I noticed one thing in the documentation though, it looks like you did a replace for nl -> ditto and it changed words like only to odittoy, so that will need updated before releasing. Other than that, I couldn’t find a problem. I will try to do some more testing tonight or tommorow.

Another update. Alot of work regarding parameter names and I turned about 35% of the script into a class. It now plays nicely with NewsListing. Also, I’ve started work on some new documentation. Additionally, Ditto now has its own logo thanks to Zi, myself, and Ryan’s critiques.
