MODx Original Template around the world :D

Dear folks,

What do you think about sharing our original MODx site design with other communities ?

I would appreciate positive and negative points related to this.

Get in, share what you have in mind. I am waiting...

If you are referring to our previous one, Green Marinee, then yes this would be a good idea.

Except Green Marinee was originally a WordPress theme if I am not mistaken...

About sharing designs, why not but anyone can port MODx theme if they want, like we did with WP themes...
You can’t really control who ports your theme no matter what, except if you start protecting your themes with a Creative Commons license or the likes... (and even that...).

Anyway, I’d keep the modxcms.com theme to ourselves, of course...

I am talking about current design, I gotrequest from Russian guys, they are asking for permission to use current MODx design on modx.ru.

I didn’t get it when you said other communities (misunderstanding there) I thought OTHER communities (outside MODx), not local modx websites ! Then my answer would be yes for them I would agree to it.

I talked to Ryan in this regards, also Yentsun told me that he had conversation with Foundation members but didnt conlude at the end.

Ryan said that he is fine with it, that Russian guys get our brand template to use on their Russian MODx site.

But will that site (modx.ru) will be an official site ? since he mentioned:

"And we at modx.ru intend to stay official MODx native site."

So I would like to have the official and un-official site defination.

I don’t know about the definition, since I am not the one to make that call.

But I would say that being an official MODx website would require (IMHO) a few things :

• Domain name : I do think the best choice is to reserve modxcms.tld (with tld being the local extension) for official website. I know this is not an issue right now but I am not very pleased with the use of tattoocms.tld as it will quickly become confusing when Tattoo is released and co-exist with MODx. We can only hope that the content of those websites is changed by then (i.e modxcms website are about MODx and tattoocms websites about Tattoo).
• Stay on Message : a requirement could be that those official website at least respect some basics => the mini-site Ryan talked about that would be localized (possibly simplified) version of the modxcms.com website. An issue will be the existence of forums on those websites... Ryan had chosen to keep it all under one roof and I agree, but will local communities follow ? that would be a condition too...
• Respect Template : also, if they get the modxcms.com template, they should not do extensive modifications to it.
• Decent hosting solution : I wouldn’t imagine a slow official MODx website, nor too damaging downtime, that would not be nice for our image and the image of MODx. Had it been possible, I would even have preferred official websites to be hosted by the team, but of course that would cost, since it would multiply bandwith and all, plus you’d have to get geographic IP because of SEO issues...

I know this will seem a little Stalinian to list conditions, but being an "official" website implies that the Team endorse them. Of course I’d like nothing more than trust people to respect all this out of wisdom and comittment, but people come and go and the one you trust right now might not be the one in charge in 6 months...

Of course, people could also build non-official communities and are free to do whatever they want with them, but then I would not be in favor of offering the modxcms.com template as it will give a false sense of it being official...

Thank you so much David, thats exactly what I was thinking and want to say about official and un-official status.

The Brand/Image is what I am picky about ... We worked very hard! very hard to build this site/community and reputation and we want to keep it that way.

I am not sure, but I guess we can make a common design to distribute out to communities like MODx.RU but stick the Official status to modxcms.com.

I honestly don’t care if other regional specific sites use our template. However, a cool variation thereof would be nice too... maybe like the modxhost.com site template which is pretty cool including the use of Ajax menus etc.

I would vote in favor of it...

I am not that enthusiastic about giving the modxcms.com template away too easily, or at least it should not be redistributed. The last thing I want is seing modxcms.com confused with other websites using it... I mean website outside MODx.

While I do agree the main thing is the app and the different take about content management, MODx being a great tool and all...the template is part of an identity... but maybe I am wound to tight about this
