Support Site

I want to eat our own dog food, so to speak

We need a way to distribute files that tracks the number of downloads. We also need a forum, obviously. PHPbb is not too PHP5 friendly, so I'm thinking I'll just purchase a license to IPB for that. Or, ocBB might be out by then, who knows.

Susan, think getting that download manager integrated into the (to be built) support site would be doable?

Anyone have a better list of support topics or site IA they think would be more appropriate?

Other considerations?

Personally, I would reccomend vb over ipb....but then you get into the whole discussion about which is better

ipb is prettier out of the box, but I have had more luck developing for vb...as a matter of fact my upcoming rather large modification will be for vb.

I can pick up a license to IPB for around $40 I think (after the first they're less expensive). We also have a plugin that integrates IPB with MODx about 2/3 done, if that makes a difference. Any other thoughts from some other folks?

IPB seems fine, but it sure would be nice to work with a project that is more closely aligned with our own project principles. I think it especially important to find a solution that is GPL, is lightweight and extensible, and generates standards compliant output; just like us! I believe that IPB being the only integrated forum package with Eto has made that CMS less popular in some markets that it has the potential for, simply because the only forum integration snippets available are it are for a commercially licensed product. Of course, the opposite may be true in other markets.

This is a less important point in regards to the support site than other considerations, so I have no objections to using IPB for our support site, just think we should consider other systems more in-line with our own for providing additional integrations with.

I'd do PHPbb in a heartbeat, but quite frankly it's a semi-trainwreck, and it's not compatible with PHP5. I think they've run into more than a bit of stagnation and bloat there. Hence ocBB, a forke of phpBB 3 development trunk, which might be an option. Whatever it is it should work on PHP5 AFAIAC.

As soon as I do get a few moments for such things...I plan on having a full integration of punBB for my own site; I like it cause it's light and XHTML/CSS compliant out of the box, but not sure it's the best choice. Anyone have experience with other systems out there?

Well... to revive a slightly older topic... Jason, Zi and I have been very busy over the last few days working on the support site. Love to see whay you guys think. Next step is to continue porting support docs as quickly as humanly possible:

Now my question is why is the support site called modx while in another thread we had the word Tattoo?

Could somebody explain this to me ?

MODx is te project name for Tattoo. Tattoo has not been unveiled to the general community yet.
