    It’s a sad fact that hundreds of thousands of people die every year in the UK, and the relatives of the deceased are left to sort out their estate, disburse legacies and pay inheritance tax. This has largely been a complex affair involving much paperwork, visits to solicitors and probate offices. Prob8 is a new website, built in modx, designed to make the process easier by moving the application process online and by providing a system for reviewing the progress of the application and financial settlements.

    In practice this has been the most complex website I’ve attempted to build in modx by a considerable margin smiley The requirements included a multi-stage application forms with branching logic, multiple clonable form regions within collapsible fieldset regions (accordion), instant form save (via ajax), with data serialised and stored in the db and retrieved to repopulate the form. There are three levels of webuser access allowing clients, lawyers and admins access to their own views on a custom built administrative interface that allows applications to be managed, assigned, reviewed and downloaded, tied to a notifications system that alerts relevant parties to progress updates; and, for the admin, full user management of lawyers and clients. An idea of the what the client view looks like can be viewed by viewing the tour.

    The user registration handling is down to a webloginpe (albeit I rewrote a lot of the class and hardened it), and the form handling makes use of eform and its events (no hacking of eform was required I’m pleased to say).

    There were various reasons for using modx on this project (rather than a framework which would have been my usual choice), but as it turns out it the flexibility of modx and particularly snippets such as eform made the whole thing a lot more straightforward than I feared.

    I invite you to try out the system (we’re still testing it so it’s not properly launched yet), just please add ’TEST’ to one of the address fields on registration so that we can delete later.

    Cheers

    Mark

      Very nice site and great description of how you did it. The tour is very cool, you can see that it is a pretty complex site. Also very cool that you could build it with MODx....thanks for sharing it.

      I could not get through the application simply because I don’t know a valid UK postal code (or I was too lazy to look for one). I’ll find a postal code and try it again later. wink

          @ dev_cw - UK Postcode, try CT4 7TR (mine laugh)
          @ Mark - Amazing work, can’t begin to think how complex working out and then implementing the functionality was.

              Great work m8 smiley

              Only one thing I found - on ’step one’ - just might be an idea on the activation side to change the field title to ’Enter your chosen password’ or some such gentle wording.

              Why? Well I entered the activation password twice in said field you see and I like to think I am au fait with forms on the web smiley

              Cheers!

                    Hmm. I’m using a font cascade I haven’t tried before:
                    font: 0.75em/1em "Lucida Grande", "Myriad", "Myriad Pro", "Frutiger", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;

                    I’m basically trying to serve Lucida Grande for Macs and Arial for Windows (normally I’d use "Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans Unicode" with the expectation that Windows would see the Lucida Unicode, but unfortunately it looks terrible on my forms). I suspect you may have one of the fonts in the middle installed- maybe Frutiger? - and it’s not looking great with IE’s Cleartypye rendering. It would look lovely in in Safari however thanks to the fact that Apple bundled the OSX font rendering system with the windows version of the browser.

                    Mind sending a screenshot? What I could do is use IE conditional comments to serve an IE only CSS file and specify Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif for windows.

                    Excellent idea, thank you! I’m going to do just that smiley
