Requested modx be added to wappalyzer

Do you know wappalyzer ?

Wappalyzer tracks the distribution of software on the web.

And that’s done thanks to a FireFox extension (which you can find here : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10229).

Lots of application are not recognized yet by the engine but I have just requested they add modx
It could become an interresting source of information for us.

MODx detection has been added, the latest version of the add-on is awaiting approval from Mozilla. If you can’t wait, get it here:

Thanks Elbert for the quick adjustement to the detection

It now uses var MODX_MEDIA_PATH = "media"; instead of "Powered By" footer and modxhost var

MODX_MEDIA_PATH = "media" should be gone in the future if it isn’t already (which I thought it was), we don’t require a powered by link, and in the future the manager directory will be reconfigurable ... how does this work under that situation?

I would vote against it since part of the MODx allure is it’s transparency. Tracking MODx can be like tracking a ghost. The MODX_MEDIA_PATH method will still show a large number of sites but will not be a long term measuring parameter.

Definitely will not be any markers. Get Satisfaction.com was listed as the largest MODx user but that isn’t a MODx site? I say was because now the site is not even online.

As for the MODX_MEDIA_PATH it was a short term solution I realize that, but it can evolve of course... Unless you have some other element of distinctive code handy (it was the only reliable thing I had in mind for 0.9.x)

Anyway, I think it could be nice to have a way to get a rough estimate of how many websites run modx (and other systems), and wappalyzer seems like the tool for the job...
