Hi, Really sorry about this but..... embarrassed

I’m trying to add simple pages to the menu using the manager but for some reason the menu isn’t showing / being populated.

The attributes for all pages seem correct (public, show in menu - yes etc.)

Can anyone tell for the basic procedure for adding a page ? I’m starting to think that it’s an install problem as I’ve tested using the simple template with no joy. It can’t be all that hard ?

    Cheers

    David

Ok - It turns out that the Wayfinder thingy wasn’t working\installed correctly. I reinstalled as a Snippet and it seems to work much better.

In my install, there appears to be no existing Snippets, Chunks or Plug-Ins in the ’Elements’ section. Is this normal ?

No problem. I’ve installed 1.0.2 - Version codename rev 6066

          PHP Version 4.4.9 / Apache/1.3.41 (Unix) / MySql Client API version 5.0.51a

My original install to a different server went fine. I subsequently had to swap servers and I installed afresh. The 1st attempt stalled at the end, so I deleted out all the old files and specified a new db tag. That seemed to go OK, but the ’extras’ appear to be missing.

The other clue is that the ’Manage Files’ function fails with the following error:

Warning: dir(/home/racetest/web/) [function.dir]: failed to open dir: Permission denied in /home/racetest/web/manager/actions/files.dynamic.php on line 422

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /xxxx/xxxxxx/xxx/manager/actions/files.dynamic.php on line 425
          Filename Modified File size Options

I’m guessing the Install did not work correctly. I had to tinker with the file permissions but otherwise it seemed to install OK.

Any suggestions - Can you tell me what should be present\installed in the Elements section ?

I’m unsure now if I should scratch this installation and install again, or manually install the missing elements. I don’t want to loose the work I have so far.

          Thanks in advance,

          David

Your work should be in the database and possibly non-modx files, so you should be able to just copy everything from the original .zip file and overwrite what’s there without losing anything.

Then do an upgrade install. *Don’t* install the sample site. Do install the snippets and other addons.

Cheers, I may try a third install and see how I get on. I’m still at the ’playing’ stage so it’s not the end of the world. It’s a shame that there is not a ’restore’ option (that I’ve found) to rebuild the db from a backup.

Ok - I installed again, and no Extra’s installed at all. My problem is, I’m reluctant try and develop anything more as I don’t know what’s supposed to be there and what’s not, and if the Install is relaible sad

There was a minor error at the end of the install, before logging in. Would this be the cause ?

                Install results

Setup will now attempt to setup the database:

Creating connection to the database: OK!

                Selecting database `xxxxxxx`: OK!

                Checking table prefix `modx2_`: OK!

                Creating database tables: OK!

                Writing configuration file: OK!
                Chunks:

You have an error in your SQL syntax near ’SELECT (CASE COUNT(*) WHEN 0 THEN 0 ELSE `id` END) `id` FROM `xxxxxxx`.`modx2_c’ at line 1

MySQL 5.0.51a is known to have some serious bugs, so that could be your problem it should definitely be upgraded.

That page with the OKs on it is critical. There’s no point in continuing the install if there are errors or warnings on that page.

It’s also possible that you just have a corrupted file from your download or upload. Try downloading, uploading (overwrite any existing files), and reinstalling. Again, that shouldn’t affect your work as long as you do an upgrade install.

Cheers BobRay, I’m getting the feeling that the server I’m installing on is pretty rubbish. I did do a fresh download on the last try but the results were the same.

One last question, if that’s OK.

Am I right in assuming that you need to use a tool like PhpMyAdmin to restore the db backup ? I did give it a go but with no joy (but then that could be an issue with my privileges on that server).

Also, are there any folder’s I need to keep and restore should I move work to a fresh server\install ?

                    Thanks again

                    David

PS. Despite my issues Modx seems a good tool ;-)

It depends on your backup method. If you used PhpMyAdmin export to a .SQL file, you need to use PhpMyAdmin Import to restore the DB. If you used some other backup tool that has a "restore" function, you’d just need that. MODx’s buit-in backup creates an .SQL file so, yes, you’d have to use PhpMyAdmin Import to restore.

I’m not sure I understand your other question. If you’re creating a fresh install, you’d only need to preserve any files you put there yourself (e.g. image files, css, etc.)

BTW, if you’re shopping for a new ISP, Bluehost has an automated MODx install via SimpleScripts: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,33164.msg201950.html#msg201950. I’m not sure what version they’re installing now.
