I have downloaded the zip file for MODX but how do I install?
The file has no quick install icon inside.
I’m not a coder by the way so sorry if I come over as a bit stupid.
I have been searching for a tidy looking CMS to develop some sites done with Serif in order to be able to allow a degree of client/user management.
In particular by way of letting ’clients’ or others remotely change page content.
MODX seems to be the most well presented out of all the ones I’ve looked at and I’m eager to get started.

Thanks for the advice. (I was expecting it to be a downloadable and runable program from my PC).
i.e click icon and MODX starts - any work done on it then uploaded to a server/host or website.
As I said I am not a coder and have a lot to learn.
I think I understand how to install MODX now thanks to your pointers.
However the problem I am having is getting a bit complicated for me now.
Originally I was using Serif to design web sites which I have been running. Dead easy - all done for me (including built in FTP upload). The opportunity to design a car sales room website arose which meant I had to look into Client Controlled Systems so that the client can update new and sold cars from his own PC.
My intention was to combine a php Gallery within CMS sales pages within or linked to my Serif designed site.
Taking advice from Serif Forums I was told to use a local server (Apache/XAMPP version 1.7.1) to test any CMS which I chose/ build.
I have now installed XAMPP / FileZilla and downloaded MODX to my harddrive.
1. I found the basic instructions regarding FileZilla on XAMPP control panel really difficult to follow at first - I think because the English wasn’t perfect as much as anything.
2. When I managed to understand I followed the instructions but can not see how to upload MODX to localhost using Filezilla.
I’ve used filezilla before with few problems when having trouble with the Serif FTP client but since uninstalled it and now it doesn’t look the same.
Basically I would just like to know how to get a working version of MODX loaded onto my localhost so that I can practice building these CMS pages.

The suggestion to use FileZilla for FTP means for a remote site. On localhost, you’ll never need FTP, simply copy the files (in fact, you should be able to just unzip the modx .zip file in the root directory of your local MODx site -- e.g. c:\xampp\htdocs\mysite\ ).
Then once you’ve created the DB and the config.inc.php file, type localhost\mysite\install into the address window of your browser and you should be in business.

I finally got the MODx installation pages running after a few trials and errors with the local database creation.
However when the instalation checklist appeared I was prompted to enter the code (shown at foot of post) into ’manager/config.inc.php’
’config.inc.php’ was a folder I created in ’includes/manager’ as per instruction.
I didn’t really know how to save it so I entered into a notepad doc.
I then clicked okay and got the following message in red and which I could not return from.
I thought I was getting there but I’m stumped again.

I have tried to do it again.
On the connection information page of the MODX installation I am entering ’modx’ as the name of the database.
This is the name I have given the database on the local server and although it worked the first time after some trial and error it is now (this time) reporting a failed action with the words - failed, could not create database.
This is despite the fact that the database DOES exist and it worked the first time.
Wronglocation. It should be ’manager/includes/config.inc.php’
