Ok,
So I asked a question about this recently, and by all accounts its a pretty easy process of moving the MODx files, alter the htaccess, maybe run an upgrade.
Well, I’ve moved the files, altered the htaccess. But then it was still all pointing to the original site_url. But also, I couldn’t get into the Manager to clear the cache. My manager page is just completely blank.
So then I ran an upgrade, it said it went successfully, but the manager page is still blank.
I’m stuck! Help!!
Thanks
Ok - SO I cleared my browser cache, and I can access my manager login screen, however, my old login details no longer work!!
Argh!!
So I sent myself a new login, the e-mail arrived in my inbox without problem. But when I click to activate the new login details I get a page of errors.
I think something, somewhere is still referring to my old file.
Ok, so I went back and started again from my old folder. The installation and manager were working as normal. I cleared the cache, and made sure my site_url was being called uncached in the base href.
I’ve moved them again, and the same is happening. I can see the site content, but the styles aren’t present because the base href is still pointing to the folder. The manager login page is just blank, so I can’t get in.
Any idea what I should change?
Thanks
One thing I would try is to run an upgrade of MODx on your new site. Even if you have the latest version, just follow the steps and run the install again but in upgrade mode, this will keep your site files intact and set your paths correctly. I often find I need to do this whenever I move MODx sites from one server to another or even within the same server.
IMPORTANT: Make sure that you have a nice backup of all your site files and database before you do this.
Hi Mary,
Can you just let me know what exactly I’m suppoed to upload before I run a setup? There’s something in the official docs about just upload a complete new install of MODx, but not overwriting certain files? Confusing!
Thanks
Unless you’ve modified any of the core files/snippets, you should be just fine uploading a complete fresh download of MODx and then running the installer in upgrade mode. I’ve done it that way numerous times with no issues. I never alter the core files or snippets, so usually I don’t worry about losing any custom stuff.
Thats what I tried the first time I think, and when it didn’t work, I presumed I went wrong at the upgrade stage.
Oh well, I’m just installing a fresh install. Will run the upgrade when I’m done and home for better luck this time.
Fingers crossed!
Thanks

Careful when doing this on OS X; copying over a directory structure replaces the outermost directory and everything under it! It doesn’t go through the directories and replace only already existing files leaving your custom files alone.
Fortunately, I’m doing all of this on Windows 7. Thanks for the heads up though!
