Attempting to install MODx on WebMatrix using the Web app gallery over there at MS.
The installation is now at a point where it’s asking for a session key blank to be filled in.
Any suggestions for that one tried leaving it blank.

It’s on the same screen where it’s creating a database user etc. the very last blank is for Website Session Key?

    Thanks,
    Crssp

OK got brave attempted to just fill-in the field with 1234 and got this error message then:

    ---------------------------
    Microsoft Web Application Gallery

Cannot use the value ’1234’ for parameter ’Website Session Key’. The value must match the regular expression ’.{8,20}’.

You need to create a random string between 8 and 20 characters long.

Thanks Ryan, this is for local install then, will I need to remember this number or for security purposes does it need to be excessively random, I just used a countdown series 987654321, or something wink
        Thanks for speedy reply.

It seems to have worked, and I got the greenlight. Installation go!

I’m sure to be quite popular, I notice nobody has mentioned WebMatrix at all in the forums.

It’s used to create the session IDs that can’t be easily guessed, in theory increasing security. Once it’s in your config file you’re good and don’t need to remember a thing.

Looks like this is a catch-all topic.
I was hoping to have a clean install.
The test site did get installed, is there a good way to delete the test site.
I was hoping to work with the netTut’s MODx tutorial site files for starters.

Just reinstalling would be the easiest way to handle it, making sure not to install the demo content.

Cool I need the practice, I never saw a check box or anything for the options on that, but remember hearing of it.
I had several takes getting everything going, just got this latest WebMatrix today, and the MySQL connector and php didn’t want to install at first, wound up manually running the installer for the mySQL connector.

Anyways, I can always keep this install to have a copy of the test site, in fact I definitely should.

It looks like installing directly from the MS Web Gallery has the sample site wired in.
I’ll have to do a manual install following the MODx doc’s more closely then.

                Thanks for all your help.

Hi Back at my installation for newbies.
Someone from the WebMatrix team was able to steer me straight on creating a MySQL db using the command line.
If anyone is interested the forum post was here on the webmatrix forums:
                  http://forums.iis.net/p/1173668/1963520.aspx

The 1st reply from faith_a had the necessary instructions.
                  My current ramblings beneath that.

Anyways, I’m in the process of populating my new database and running the install.
I un-ticked the box for the sample site, but I’m not sure about all the other series of option boxes, whether to leave those all checked, none checked or just some checked?

I guess the tutorial on netTuts isn’t very complete in that regard.

                  [edit:]
I went ahead and just unticked a couple boxes at the top of the install options, the first three options I turned off I think it was, so no sample site, or MODx host template, and the demo menu.
Any thoughts, did I do good?

You can always re-upload the install folder and run its index.php and select "upgrade" mode and install them if you decide you want them. I haven’t installed those items for years now; but they can be useful for learning the system.

Can you followup then, do you not install any of the check box items, and just select the none option?

That’s my thinking too, having a ready at hand IDE and local setup makes it so, so easy to drop a new version in and start over.
Learning a little about upgrade options is a must if ever going to a production site.
It’s been awhile since the evo branch got an update though from the looks of it?
