    Hi
i’m very new to web design i installed the cms modx and i want to use the xampp as a local server

now it seems xampp is working fine. and i unpacked the modx file in the root of xampp
my problem is if i call the link: localhost/install/index.php
    i’m getting an error.
    any idea why?

what i see under my tools are only these:
    phpMyAdmin
    Webalizer
    Mercury Mail
    FileZilla FTP

I’m wondering where I can find the MySQL.
Do I need to install it separately?

But I can see in my status the My SQL Database is activated. So I’m not really sure where to go from here. I just need to install the modx and see if it works.

    Please help, thanks

Also, you need to create a database first:

      1. Access the installed xampp control panel and click to MySQL Admin button.
      2. Go to the Database section of the phpMyAdmin
      3. Enter a database name and click to create! You’ll also need to figure out how to create a database user (and user password) to attach to that database. Note the name and password.

You’ll then need to point the browser at the install directory.

      Good luck!
        Mostly harmless.

          Try the privileges tab.
            Mostly harmless.

ok what i did i copied it under htdocs, i just learned from Bob that the unzipped files will not work under xampp folder because it can’t find the path.

now i’m on the installation site and i’m getting an error that :
Checking database: failed - database collation mismatch; use SET NAMES or choose latin1_swedish_ci

            Please see attached image:
            thanks

ps. i didn’t click on the privilege tab anymore.
i just use the old username from the MySQL

thanks smiley now i’m in the manager configuring the settings.
i saved it already and i would like to change some settings again, how can i go back to that first configuration settings?

                I can’t find it anymore.

Now under Site>Configuration (which is on the right) i can see this message:
How can i change it to read-only? I tried right clicking on it go to Properties and select read-only but I’m still getting the same message even after logging out and logging in.

One or more configuration details didn’t check out OK:

Configuration warning: ’Config file still writable’

                What does this mean?
Very naughty people could potentially wreak some havoc on your site and everything associated with it. Really. Please make your config file (/manager/includes/config.inc.php) read only!

                Configuration warning: ’Installer still present’

                What does this mean?
The /install directory contains the installer for MODx. Just imagine what might happen if an evil person finds this folder and runs the installer! They’d probably not get too far, because they need to enter some user information for the database, but it is still best to remove this folder from your server.

Well as you’ve got it set up on your local server you can either ignore it or if its bugging you change the permissions of that file by selecting it and checking it’s properties, I think. I’m Mac so I’d say PC would be similar. You need to change the file the READ READ READ only. You really should read this:

                  http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/Installation_Guide

                  ... and do some Googling!
                    Mostly harmless.

yeah I think it doesn’t matter now because it’s just locally i just would like to try out how this newsletter works and to integrate some animation on it.
btw thanks for the link, i got that one already and it’s most for linux users.

it’s not even written their that you should put the unzipped files under htdocs. so it’s -1 already.

btw, i want to open this link:
                    http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/Evo1/Home

and it seems it’s not working
i will try to install the TXNewsletter which is another part of my problem
                    can you open this site?
                    thanks

                    ps- i can’t still change the config.php into read-only
it doesn’t says on the website you gave. its for linux mostly and i’m using windows 7
