    I’ve looked around for a simple rss reader for modx. I’ve seen a few older ones PieX FeedX and I can’t get any of them to work.

    First of all, I’m not a programmer at all. I do get very confused on how to use these things and I can’t seem to find any decent, simple documentation.

    Can anyone point me in the right direction to get some rss feeds up on a site that I’m working on?

    Any help would be appreciated.

      Hi
      I don’t know if this would meet your needs but I created a very simple snippet to show external rss feeds on a website. You can find the tutorial series as well as the code on my blog, the last post in the series is: http://codingpad.maryspad.com/2010/01/16/modx-custom-snippet-caching/

      I intend to continue improving it but it might give you ideas for a starting point.

      You can also easily integrate SimplePie into MODx for the same purpose. That’s my next step smiley

        Thanks for the reply. I ended up playing with pieX for a while and got it working. I was missing the upload of SimplePie from their site. It looks like it works fine. Now of course as I read the documentation I get completely lost, so I’m guessing I won’t be doing anything fancy!

        Thanks again!

          No worries, glad you got it working. The SimplePie documentation is actually pretty good, just needs a little time to digest smiley

            After using SimplePie and PieX for almost 2 years, I'm now getting the error below. I know something changed with PHP that is causing this. Does anyone have a fix for this? Some way of turning off the reporting of deprecated info?

            Sorry, this stuff always confuses me.

            « MODx Parse Error »

            MODx encountered the following error while attempting to parse the requested resource:

              It's definitely a PHP5 issue: https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=Assigning+the+return+value+of+new+by+reference+is+deprecated+php

                Hi BobRay, Thanks for the link. I'm using Evo 1.0.5. I'm not very good at these types of issues. Any guidance as how I can fix and continue to use PieX?

                  It's hard to give specific advice. It's likely that somewhere in the PieX or SimplePie snippets there's a line of code that's causing that error -- probably containing $someVariable =& new SomeClass(). Sometimes, it's as simple as taking out the ampersand. Sometimes, that breaks everything.

                  You could downgrade to an earlier version of PHP or hope someone fixes the snippet.

                  If you look in the MODX index.php file, you should see a line like this:

                  $modx->setDebug(E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE);

                  If it says E_STRICT instead of E_ALL, changing it to E_ALL might help.

                  You could also try upgrading SimplePie: http://simplepie.org/

                    I looked at the index.php in the main directory and the index.php in the manager directory. I don't see that line of code. Am I looking in the wrong files? I'm using Evo 1.0.5.

                    Any thoughts on another simple RSS solution for this version of ModX?

                      Sorry, that was a dumb suggestion. I was looking at a Revo install.

                      I believe the Evo code is:

                      error_reporting(E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE);

                      You might try changing it to

                      error_reporting(E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE & ~E_DEPRECATED);

                      It may not work, and it's not a good solution since it may hide important errors.

                      Sorry, I don't know what's available for Evo. I think Spiefeed works well for Revolution.

                      I tried to look at the code of PieX, but I couldn't find it anywhere. If the code contains the author's email, you could try contacting the author to see if an update is, or will be, available.
