    sad
    Hello,

I downloaded modx-1.0.0, uploaded all the files on server and started with installation.

    Apache version 2.2.13 (Unix)
    PHP version 5.2.10
    MySQL version 5.0.81-community
    Browser is Chromo .

I tried any way to write the database details on installation.
I entered the server IP address, username and password (even copy&paste)
and it keeps giving me Failed error message
" Test database server connection and view collations.
    Connection to host: failed!"

Please assist, I don’t know what to do.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Efry

Have you tried to simply write the word "localhost" as the database server address?

          Don’t cry, just be happy!

FYI, most hosting companys disallow external database servers for security reasons and the only thing allowed is to connect to the db server at localhost.

            :) oh, well.

How do I know if I want "Sample Web Site"? is there anyway to see it and is it reversable?

If you’re new to MODx I would recommend to install the sample site just to see, how things are done in MODx.
However you can at any point delete or modify the sample site or jut parts of it.

Please accept my apology for my many questions day. It’s the first installation of this CMS.

I got an error message "Checking if Register_Globals is off: FAILED!

This configuration makes your site much more susceptible to Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attacks. You should speak to your host about disabling this setting, usually by one of three ways: modifying the global php.ini file, adding rules to a .htaccess file in the root of your MODx install, or adding custom php.ini override files in every directory on your install (and there’s a lot of them). You will still be able to install MODx, but consider yourself warned."

I am looking for the PHP.INI file on server but I can’t find it. Any ideas?
I checked on server control panel and it is set as on, like the error message says, but it shows the details just for reference.

                    Please your kind advice.

Register_Globals should be set to off for security reasons.
However some cheap hosting companies do not configure there servers properly.
If you’re on a shared host you can try to put a .htaccess file in your root with the following content:
                      php_flag register_globals Off

If it works, the your lucky, if it throws an server error, you’ve to search another hosting company.

For these basic questions you can also seach this forum, most of them are alredy answered.
The search function is little tricky so using Google might be better:
                      <your search> site:modxcms.com/forums
