I have a client that recently pulled away from their web company and received the contents of their site in a zip file. I just recently looked at it and found that it was a modx site and that they had just pulled the entire contents off through ftp and zipped it up. Is it possible to get the site back up and running from this? I’ve installed modx already but have no clue where to go from there.
BTW I have no modx experience at all.

There should be a .sql file in there somewhere; without that there’s no site.

You have all the files, but you don’t seem to have the database. Without the database, the files are nothing more than a default MODx install with some addons copied in. If they knew what they were doing, then they should have exported the database to a .sql file. If not, then there’s no getting the site back. sad
I'm learning more about MODx all the time and loving it.

Open up that .sql file in a text editor and see if it has tables and data for more than just Jot. If it doesn’t, and there’s no other .sql file, then you’d better have some harsh words with the previous hosting provider.

And ask your client if they didn’t have any backups of their site. (take this as a lesson... backup frequently, and most certainly back up before taking any major action, such as moving the site or upgrading!)

If I understand correctly, you have a new MODx installation waiting. If this is the case, go to the new site’s mysql manager (usually phpmyadmin) and import the original site’s .sql file into its database.

Upload anything in the assets folder they had from the original site, such as templates and images.

Upload the new install folder again and run the installer in upgrade mode.

Come back and we’ll take it to the next step when those three things are done.

Ok, then if all is well up to this point, you need to log in to the Manager and correct the path and URL settings in the Configuration.

In the Interface and Features tab, for the rich text and TV file and image browser, edit the File base path. The File Browser URL is probably set to assets/ and can stay that way.

In the File Manager tab, edit the File Manager Path. Note that these paths are NOT URLs, these are actual server file paths.

If you don’t know what your file paths should be, go to Reports -> System Info, and click the "view" link for phpinfo(). Scroll down to the bottom section and look for the SERVER["DOCUMENT ROOT"] entry. It will say something like "/home/yourdomain/public_html". This is the path you need. Add /assets to the end of it to move the browser’s starting point to your site’s assets folder.

I don’t see anything that resembles the following under the I&F tab "rich text and TV file and image browser,"

nor do i see file browser under that tab. i do see resource path and resource url

I did find the file manager path and added assets to it
