Pardon my stupid question but isn’t rails a framework for ruby? grin

There are lots of RoR CMSs but the bulk are written in PHP, .Net, ASP and JAVA.

The most poplular FOSS apps are written in PHP because it is an OS language.

I’ve never seen any Rails-based CMSs out there that really inspire me .... there is Radiant which I think is promising but lacking somewhat in features that you’d expect if you’ve been using MODx for any length of time. Most of the Rails stuff I’ve seen/tried in the past seem to be more centered around blogging than actual full-on content management.

              exactly garryn,

i want a flexible and easy to use CMS with all features of MODx based on Ruby/rails.

Is there any OS-project to rewrite MODx in Rails?

If not: somebody with excellent knowledge in MODx and Rails should start one!

              I will join them.

Why do you prefer RoR above PHP? What are the benefits of RoR above PHP?

No one is going to put the time and effort into writing an OS CMS platform with the features and functions of modx that many servers can’t support. RoR is clunky on shared servers but shared servers and the ubiquity of php/mysql is why there are many CMS and many other OS projects built on them because more users and more places to run means more developers and contributors.

The spread of RoR seems to be waning as the 37signals guys get on just improving their apps. PHP is getting better as OOP matures and 5 and 6 propose to make it even faster.

If you want to roll your own CMS in RoR go ahead but you have a long road ahead.

Why not take a look at xPDO and modx Revolution for a more OOP framework built using a MVC pattern?

                  Have fun, code safe.

I have used Ruby for an online shop and it’s terrible.... it’s slow as hell and from what I’ve read, that’s normal for Ruby. You’re better sticking with something like MODx as you have a very active community and nearly everything you could need is here and backed up with excellent support.

@rossco: yes, ruby’s performance could be and will be much better. Actually Ruby 1.9 is up to 50% faster than prior versions. The current stable version is for me fast enough.

                      exactly, that’s a point.

yes, that’s why i am asking for existing projects. I don’t have the time and abilities to do this alone.

yeah, these are undoubted a great leap forward and i see a bright future for MODx.
The only thing is that I like the ruby-style more than PHP.

@mediaguy: ok, it’s more emotional (programming in ruby gives me more pleasurable feeling), my heart’s desire is a MODx CMS in RoR.
