Thanks Sottwell but I don't know where the find the home directory and at a stage in my learning the php error logs mean little to me!
Well, read my first paragraph again. The server loads the adaptive-image.php file instead of the image file when it gets asked for an image. It has nothing to do with MODX. Get rid of the snippet.

I agree with Susan in that Adaptive-Images doesn't really have anything to do with MODx.
Make sure your adaptive-images.php file is in the proper location so that it can be found. That .php should not be in a snippet if that's what you were doing. It should just be a stand alone .php file.

Thanks both and forgive my learning curve. Where should the adaptive-images.php file be stored? In the root? And how do I save as a php file? Sorry, and thanks, Missusdoubleyou

I can empathize with your learning curve so no worries. Question I always ask myself though is "am I learning to swim or just swimming out to deeper water"?:)
I put mine in the root, but I think you can put it anywhere—as long as you indicate where it's located in the rewrite.

Dear mmcgee and Susan
Many many thanks both for your help. I have it working! I found it worked by putting the php file at the top level of assets. Also the re-direct you found mmcgee worked and triggered the install of phpmyadmin which I am familiar with using.
My course project is a website containing many images of local historic buildings so again thanks for helping me to get this working.
Best wishes, missusdoubleyou
