Morning all,
I have seen many Evo vs Revo posts but most seem to be old and I didn't want to revive an old thread so have opted to post a new one. I built my last site up with Evolution and it seemed to all work well. I now have a new project which will be a small personal e-Commerce site. The site will house a basic shop and small blog. I spent a long time learning Evo (with the help of the awesome MODX forum!) and I am now wondering whether to progress with Evo or to turn my hand to learning Revo and bringing myself up to date?
I guess what I'm asking is are the benefits of Revo worth learning all over again or would I be better off sticking with Evo?
Regards
SB

Current site? Perhaps stay with what works. But for a new site: REVO all the way. Bob's book outlines some of the differences, which to me seem minor in terms of a learning curve.

I am a strong supporter of Evo, as are many users in the forum.
I don't think Evo should be written off too soon, the latest version has been downloaded over 12,000 times - which proves that there are still a lot of Evo users out there.
I think if the Evo dev team keep up the extreme good work they have completed to date, that Evo will stay for a while yet.
Revo on the other hand is according to the LLC the backbone of the future, meaning, if and when it appears, MODX3 will be based on the Revo framework and there will be an upgrade tool for Revo.
I have been juggling with the thought of converting a couple of my sites to Revo, but it seems a daunting task. My sites have 2 - 4000 IDs used, with tons of chunks and TVs, and as there are no tools as such to upgrade its going to probably be expensive to do so - or at least extremely time consuming to get everything working as was.

FYI, a new Evo to Revo conversion package is in the works.
Here's my $.02. There are only two real advantages that Evolution has over Revolution (and they're not a trivial ones): A speedier Manager Manager and a simplified permission system. In every other respect, Revolution is superior, imo. Here's a quick list with just a few of Revolution's advantages:
- Ability to install virtually all add-on components in a few clicks
- Easy editing of MODX objects in multiple windows
- Easier migration to MODX 3
- Vastly superior architecture under the hood
- xPDO makes custom programming much easier
- Improved security via renaming and moving key directories
One disadvantage to Revo is that it is heavier on the server, and has more server requirements. Evo is lighter and will run nicely on servers that won't run Revo.
Also custom Manager pages (Modules in Evo, CMPs in Revo) are much easier to create for Evo.
