I want to organise a large site by placing templates & chunks into the category associated with each item.

System settings on a shared hosting account
    ModX 2.3.1
    apache 2.2.29
    php 5.3.29
    mySql 5.5.37
    Linux

After creating a number of templates I thought I could just drag and drop them into a created category, however I am not able to do this. There is a 'not allowed' symbol (red circle with single diagonal line) when I try to drag and drop.

I was under the impression this can be done so I am wondering if I have to change any settings to achieve this?

You need to place one item in the element group in the category, then you can drag others into the category in that element group. You cannot drag elements into the categories in the Category group.
