The general consensus on Slashdot appears to be that it's only a PR move by GoDaddy - their withdrawal of overt support does not equate to a real change in their thinking. There's still a massive exodus of domains from their registrar. I moved mine off months ago over some other stupidity they had bumbled into, although I forget now exactly what it was.

They might not even need SOPA:

Yeah, that's only like 4 or 5 days of registrations, unfortunately. GoDaddy hosting is hands down the worst I've ever experienced, but it's hard to find a registrar for some of the less-common TLDs (e.g. .me). Network Solutions is crazy expensive, and you can't register the .me domains everywhere. GoDaddy remains one of the top players in the domain market: GoDaddy, SnapNames, NameJet and of course the cartel leader Verisign. The whole business model of selling domains really is like a cartel: if Verisign doesn't allow you in the club, you can't buy or sell domain names. I think they weigh in disproportionately in the operation of the worldwide DNS root servers: http://www.isoc.org/briefings/020/

Who do you guys use as a thorough and cost-effective registrar? NameCheap looks like a decent option, and they've spoken out against GoDaddy back in March: http://community.namecheap.com/blog/2011/03/30/elephants/

I've used Namecheap for a while for domain names. I have nothing bad to say about them.
