    which editor will give users access ONLY to standard HTML tags, plus my own custom classes, plus minimal formatting (maybe)? No colors, no tables, no fonts, nothing that could cause their text to deviate from my design.

    TinyMCE should be ok, but you have to remove the buttons from TinyMCE's configuration.

    Take a look at "What You Mean Editor":

    This isn't integrated with MODx yet, but I'd love to see someone create an Add on from this.

    It looks really easy to integrate, but it's based on jQuery and I'm not sure that would play nice with ExtJS. It still needs an image browser and upload module, but it looks like that's in the works.

    Otherwise, it's one impressive editor. I'd love to see it replace TinyMCE. If I had more time, I'd like to see if I could package it with NewsPublisher.
