I have successfully installed Modx and am running version .9.6.3. I have several pages live and am in the process of moving our entire site into Modx. Before I go much further I need to understand how to backup the Modx system I have running and the data my users are entering. And how to restore from this backup. I am having trouble finding a good description of the backup approach that is recommended.

Hi keithmtx, you could try reading the docs here
http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/MODx096/Adminstration, this should give you a feel for the overall approach, also there is an extras package named BkupMODx to help you with this.
I also suggest that before you move your existing site you upgrade to evolution 1.0.0, how to do this can be found here
http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/MODx096/Upgrading
Use MODx, or the cat gets it!
I second the suggestion for installing the
BkupMODx module. It is a real beauty.

Thanks, that will keep me busy for a while! I read where there will eventually be a migration tool to automate moving to Revolution. So was waiting for that. My skills at working with things like .htaccess files are minimal.

I use MODx built in backup feature of the Database
- First I clear MODx cache
//EDIT! --> - Clear manager actions log and the system events log
- Then I click the truncate option links for the tables.
- Now select all tables and "Generate Drop Table Statments"
SAVE SQL-file! ...Try import it in a local xampp/wamp (phpMyAdmin) to be sure it’s working!
Then I normally just backup the assets folder unless I have hacked
and modified something.
The old wiki rules --->
http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/Upgrading_Guide
The alternate method rocks!

Thanks, that is what I needed, a stepsheet. I’ll try this out!

It would be nice to have the option to install it in the MODx installer!
I need to make my own installer... It’s worth the extra file size.
Truth is, it should be part of the MODx backup. A good backup system is too important, and the database backup is just not enough.
