Many of you may be noticing some significant changes to MODx 0.9.7 this morning, as in it has been renamed. It is now being referred to as MODx Revolution 2.0.0. This is the beginning of a new re-branding effort to help us break the pre-1.0 release barrier and better differentiate this branch from the legacy MODx code.

The biggest changes you'll find are a couple of new URLs for some of the existing 0.9.7 resources:

    Subversion: http://svn.modxcms.com/svn/tattoo/tattoo/branches/revolution/
    Wiki: http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/revolution/MODx+Revolution

If you have checked-out the branches/0.9.7 code, you can use the SVN switch command to re-point your working copy to branches/revolution, and do not hesitate if you have questions about these changes or suggestions for additional changes that need to be made in order to complete the re-branding effort.

An official MODx Revolution 2.0.0-alpha-2 distribution will be made available this week. Stay tuned.

It would be fun to do this anouncement yesterday. The 14th of july is the birthday date of the French Revolution

****, we started to, but got caught up in details and hesitated. So actually, it was born on the 14th; we just didn't make our first public advance until morning...

I must say it is a very clear and engaging move ! Even if it may sound a bit too promising, as people could tend to have a harder bite on it at first, I clearly think is is a very smart move !

IMHO, I don't think there needs to be a re-branding. I'm not going to complain but I'm just not feeling it. Seems a bit unprofessional. Oh well, I still love MODx and the effort everyone puts forth. Thanks guys/gals.

It's not so much a re-branding as it is a branding clarification. It's primarily serving three specfic purposes:

    a) making room for 0.9.6 to continue having releases without running into 0.9.7; some people will still want the legacy code base until Revolution is stable for a while
    b) providing clear differentiation between the legacy code and the completely rewritten Revolution code; a minor version change does not accurately reflect the significant changes
    c) breaking the 1.0 barrier; most projects start at 1.0 and people are hesitant to use a product with numbers below 1.0; we feel MODx (even the legacy branch) is way too mature for a pre-1.0 version scheme and some additional announcements will be coming this month in that regard

Think of Revolution to be a code name, like OS X Tiger or OS X Leopard; we're simply trying to make it easier for development to continue on both paths without confusing a whole lot of people with version numbers that are simply way too close together on these very different branches.
