  • Hi all, i'm after a little help please.

I have designed a website for my client and its been signed off. I have only made a few websites before and have always used evolution and hosted by the same company with no issues. My new client already has a hosting plan and wont move so I contacted them to see if I can install modx and this is what they put...

Under Supported Web Servers it says 'IIS 6.0'.
The current Windows server that hosts your website is IIS/5.0

The problem here is that the requirements list only a MySQL database and not MSSQL. Our Windows servers will not allow you to create a MySQL database.

We could escalate this ticket with a request to be moved to a newer Windows server, however since you will not be able to run a MySQL database, we are not sure if this is what you would need.

Does this mean I can host a modx site with them? Just that the client has signed off the site and I have only ever used modx for my cms.

    Help haha

    Cheers in advance
    • Hi,

MODx does not currently support MSSQL, is the web host able to install MySQL Server to enable you to have a MySQL Database? if not your only option would be to look for another web host.

      • Hi circoloco,

You may want to write a quick report to why he should move to a newer platform aka another host

At this rate, the hosting provider is very weak in terms of security and manageability. Unless the client uses MSSQL, there shouldn't be any real problems. Transferring web hosting is relatively simple, sometimes host provider do it for you on your behalf.

I understand it's not your fault, but no hosting service provider should be running Window 2000. It shows lack of commitment to updating and improving their systems. Alternatively get them to move it over to a server that does support at least IIS6.

They still can't run MODx if upgraded to IIS6 as the host seams unwilling to install/offer MySQL. I would tend to agree, the fact they are using IIS5 isn't very promising when it comes to a commitment to protect your website.

            • Thank you for the replies - I did think this was going to be the case. The only reason I dont really want to move them is that they have over 40 different email address and cant have them going down or losing anything. I'm a designer and dont really understand all the tech side of things so scared about that as if they lose email accounts or just emails I wont know how to fix it :-s
              Pesky thing haha
              • Moving email accounts isn't very difficult, if you need a hand let me know, it's a specialty smiley

                • Hey circoloco,

I can't help you, sorry, but I'm with you - I have just had similar news about my clients' current host only providing MS SQL dbs, except my client has about 200 email addresses... now how to explain this to them? huh It seems none of the main Open Source CMSs support it, with the possible exception of Drupal 7, which also has some problems I gather.
                  • Hi again, and firstly thanks AMDbuilder for the offer!

I have just told them the facts which I wont lie confused the bones out of them ha. Anyway long story short, I have moved them to a new host and all parties seem happy enough!
                    • Glad to hear you got everything work out!

                      Happy Hosting
